TV Guillermo del Toro and Stan Lee Talk About the New "Hulk" Series

Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro and Stan Lee on the Upcoming "Hulk" TV Series
by Joseph McCabe
August 1, 2011

It seems you can't keep a good monster down... Work continues on Guillermo del Toro's upcoming TV adaptation of Marvel Comics' "The Incredible Hulk".

After the lukewarm reception to Ang Lee's Hulk and the Incredible sequel/relaunch film, have audiences finally had enough of the not-so-jolly green giant?

Not if del Toro and creator Stan Lee have anything to say about it.

We've seen a lot of incarnations of The Hulk.
Can you hint about what might make yours differ?

del Toro: What we're trying to do is, when we pitched it to MARVEL and ABC, we were very specific about this Hulk being "real" and being "now". I cannot spoil much but we are making it exist in the real world and what it would be to go through that process for real.

There's some elements of excitement about the transformation.

Lee: Hulk is really like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and it's a formula that people love. The good guy who becomes the bad guy and the two selves are always in conflict. I think that it's something that people can understand and relate to.

I think it would be a major hit.

Will it be more like the comic or more like the '70s tv show?

del Toro: More like the comic.

I really don't want to say more but we will hopefully be exploring the Hulk, through the run of the series if it makes it, as thoroughly as was done in the comic.

Will the Hulk's alter ego be Banner or Amadeus Cho?

Even though they're gonna make it like the comics, I want to see the National Register hounding him like Mr. McGee was always trying to do? There's something about him that makes him likeable.

Shoot, I accidentally made the same post several times; and I wish I could delete the duplicates.

I hope they use a real body builder instead of CGI like they've been doing in the movies. If they make the alter ego Banner, I'm hoping for Mark Ruffalo because he sounds the most like Bixby. As for the Hulk himself, I was thinking Phil Heath would be good. If they make Amadeus Cho the alter ego, they should obviously use an Asian actor; but if it's Banner, I do hope they don't contradict his ethnicity like other characters have. If they use a body builder who's a minority, that doesn't matter because he'll be doused with makeup.

This was announced in 2011 (6 years ago) so I would say this take on Hulk has been scrapped.

This was also announced before the Marvel universe really took off of film/TV (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), so I don't think del Toro's version will be happening now.

I found out that the next one won't come out until the next Avengers movie, which is next year, so it'll probably have Mark Ruffalo in it. I hope the movie comes out in spring or summer so that we'll get a full first season. The only thing I don't like is that they'll have CGI and puppetry for the Hulk instead of a real bodybuilder. Since Frank Welker from Transformers often does animal sounds on The Simpsons, I wonder if he'll do Hulk roars and growls. As for thanks, just keep the board active please.
God bless you, Jason Scott Irelan

In the early 2010s, Marvel Studios attempted to make an ABC TV show based on Mark Ruffalo's Hulk, with Guillermo Del Toro (Shape of Water, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) in line to direct the pilot episode. So, what if it happened?
