I know this show was a moderate hit, but could it have been bigger if Ted played Baxter and say Lydia Cornell played Mary Lou? Just curious?

Apparently, Ted Knight in real life grew to hate his Ted Baxter character (despite being brilliant at playing him) because it, of course, typecast him forever. Even on TCFC, it's easy to suggest Knight's deliveries were the same, even though his character on TCFC had a brain, at least.
Ted Knight also, could allegedly be quite difficult to work with. He had some fights with Ed Asner while working on The Mary Tyler Moore Show because of his "attitude." So one can assume that he grew to hate playing Ted Baxter and this spilled over onto the set and his behavior. |
