Default Why did they get rid of Jackie and Sara?

I loved Jackie and Sara and their relationships with their dad. I hated that they got rid of them.

I don't have all of the details in front of me but Deborah van Valkenburgh, who played Jackie, quit right before the end of Season 5. She for whatever the reasons, didn't want to do the show anymore, so they wrote an episode that had Jackie move to Italy to be a fashion designer.

Lydia Cornell, who played Sara, was still on the show until the end of Season 5, but after Season 5 they retooled the show and called it The Ted Knight Show. What aired as Season 6 of Too Close for Comfort is actually Season 1 of The Ted Knight Show. It was just repackaged for syndication and new title credits were created for this syndication package using the Too Close For Comfort title instead of The Ted Knight Show.

They were all set to do a season 7 but tragically Ted Knight died! The show was not as good without Jackie & Sarah but they still had Monroe & Ted Knight so it was better than ANY show on today!

I'm surprised Jackie & Sarah quit because I doubt they could've gotten a better paycheck anywhere else. Even Lydia didn't go on to star in another TV show or movie or anything.

It makes sense that the Ted Knight Show episodes were repackaged as Too Close For Comfort for syndication -- the TKS wouldn't have had enough episodes for a syndication package and it was really a continuation of TCFC.

I think that Season 6 as The Ted Knight Show kind of proved how essential and how needed Jackie and Sara were. Without them, there really wasn't much of a direction or driving force anymore.

I think that Jackie and Sara's departure hurt because without them around, the show no longer had any "youth" appeal (and dare I say, sex appeal to draw in young males). This would've been fine had Ted Knight been surrounded by a strong or stronger supporting cast. But without the daughters, there was no longer anything at its center. Characters like Monroe and Lisa the housekeeper were just too one-note to really work for long.

Lisa was ok, but I for one, missed Sara

But the ratings were respectable for season 6 right? They had to have been otherwise they wouldn't have green lit a season 7. I agree having Jackie & Sara would've helped but they can't be single forever! LOL

But they brought in a good cast of guest stars to keep it funny like old geezer Patrick Crenshaw! I think it would've survived for seasons 7 & 8 because back there wasn't the competition of the internet, cellphones, & stupid Hulu & Netflix among others!

The initial premise of the show AND the title are based on the idea of an uptight dad having his two grown adult daughters living above him in the same house where he works.

Even without Jackie and Sara that show is way better than anything on today or even recently!

I hate crap like Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld, & Friends.

They wrote her off by saying she moved to Italy!

I don't even recall them saying that. Anyone know which episode they announced that?
