Thumbs up 'Sex and the City 2' Star Finally Accepts Razzie Award

In February, Sex and the City 2 was given the Razzie Award for worst screen ensemble -- but nobody accepted it.

Until now.

David Eigenberg, who plays Steve Brady (husband to Cynthia Nixon's Miranda), picked up the award in a parody YouTube video he made with Razzie creator John Wilson and his team.

In the clip, Eigenberg is plagued by the lumpy golden raspberry statuette, finding it in his refrigerator, his microwave, his medicine cabinet -- and even his toilet.

"If I gotta take the heat of an entire ensemble movie that I was only in for three minutes, cool, I'll do it," Eigenberg finally laments to his wife, Chrysti, and son, Louie.

Later, the camera flashes to Eigenberg in bed with the award. "It's mine and it's kind of sexy," he jokes, as "If you can't escape it, embrace it -- The Razzie" flashes across the screen.

Sandra Bullock famously accepted her Razzie Award in 2010 for All About Steve -- right before winning a best actress Academy Award for The Blind Side.

Other than The Last Airbender, the next biggest target this year was on Sex and the City 2. The movie is of course based on the long-running HBO sitcom of the same name. The TV show ran from 1998-2004 and was follow-up by a successful movie in 2008. The first Sex and the City movie scored mixed reviews but was a smash at the box office. The sequel, wasn’t nearly as well-received.

Reviews for Sex and the City 2 were scathing. My wife is a fan, so I have actually seen bits and pieces. I may not be the best person to weigh in on this because I didn’t think much of the show either, but Sex and the City 2 is just unbelievably bad. Even a lot of the show’s fans were put off by the sequel. It opened in second place behind Shrek Forever After and quickly dropped out of the top ten movies at the box office.

Conventional wisdom is that Sex and the City 2 bombed, but that’s not really true. The first movie grossed over $150 million dollars on a $65 million dollar budget. It was even bigger overseas where it grossed over $260 million. The budget for the sequel was pushed up to $100 million dollars. Its domestic gross fell just short of that amount, but it still did almost $200 million dollars in foreign box office. While it was a disappointment, it wasn’t exactly a flop.

Costar Chris Noth spoke frankly about why he thought the movie didn’t connect with audiences the way the first one did:

Quote:
I think it was considered an indulgence and a distraction because it hit right when the recession happened. People were like, ‘Who gives a f*ck about these broads going to Dubai when we can’t pay our mortgage?’ It was originally intended as a romp between these friends, but I think it was a mistake to leave New York City, because New York is an integral part of that show. Without that, it just went on too long. The critical response was overwhelmingly negative … there was not one good review of that film. Not one. And I think it was very hurtful for the girls, because [the reviews] got personal.
They sure did. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune asked “Why have these women, photographed drearily and insanely costumed, become full-on drag queens?”

We’ll have more opportunities to talk about Sex and the City 2, so I’m going to move on for now. I do find it curious that the movie beat out The Last Airbender in this category despite apparently having a better screenplay and director. These movies will also face off in the Worst Picture category. Spoiler warning: The Last Airbender wins. So if The Last Airbender has the worst screenplay, worst director and is the worst picture, how can Sex and the City 2 possibly be a worse rip-off or sequel? Oh Razzies! You constantly find new ways to confound me.
