Question Was Schneider Replaceable on 'One Day At A Time?'

After being denied a pay raise, Pat Harrington Jr. temporarily left the show. One month later, producers realized Schneider's importance, agreed to give Harrington raise, and brought him back.

My question is if Schneider was really that important to the show & could he have been replaced?

Cool

No Schneider could never have been replaced on ODAAT. He was much more than just the building super. He was like a surrogate father to Julie and Barbara. and a surrogate big brother to Ann. He took upon himself to look after these three ladies who didn't have a man in their household. That kind of relationship cannot be easily replaced.

Comedian Pat Harrington WAS Dwayne Schneider; he could never be replaced.

No he was not replaceable. But if they were to play him walking in their apartment it would not worked today. With a single woman and two teenage girls. There were times he would walk in the apartment when Ann was gone. That would not fly today in the wake of our world today and the network switchboards would had blown open with fans complaning of the message that it was putting out. Back then it was unacceptable of a single man walking into a single woman's apartment with teenage girls but no one back then spoke up.

Has anyone identified the episodes he's not in from when he walked, or was this between seasons?

One that I can think of is Hardball! An ep. where Alex's baseball team needed a new coach! This role seemed like it was meant for Schneider , but he wasn't in the ep. so they brought in my Max to be the coach ! Max wasn't in the show that much at all around that time because he and Julie were supposed to be living in Houston!

It was a delight for me, but it really did seem so random why Max would suddenly be in town JUST at the very time Alex's team needed a new coach!

Good Catch - I wonder what any others are - I got a feeling they ran them out of production order to "hide" Pat's no appearances.

Anyone have a list of the season with production order?

You kind of needed the Schneider character to serve as a foil for Ann's hard boiled feminist shtick.
