TV 'Smallville' creators joining 'Charlie's Angels' TV Reboot

ABC's plan to reboot "Charlie's Angels" is getting a lift from a superpowered writing team.

Former "Smallville" executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are taking over scripting duties on the Sony Pictures Television project, which the network is developing for a potential pilot order and midseason launch.

The duo, whose theatrical credits include "Shanghai Noon" and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," will replace Josh Friedman, who initially was hired to adapt the project. Gough and Millar launched "Smallville" and ran it for seven seasons before exiting the show in 2008.

The rest of the "Angels" team remains unchanged, which includes the producers of the two "Charlie's Angels" movies: Drew Barrymore, Leonard Goldberg and Nancy Juvonen. Goldberg exec produced the original 1976-81 series.

"Angels" is one of three few disco-era remakes this development season: CBS' "Hawaii Five-O" made the network's fall schedule, but NBC's "The Rockford Files" struck out.

Last week, the CW announced that the upcoming 10th season of "Smallville" will be its last. It will air Fridays in the fall.

Gough is repped by WME; Millar by CAA.

I wish that Drew Barrymore had nothing to do with the new series. She would most likely insist on something utterly stupid like forcing her pro gun control views into the proceedings. I'm also willing to bet that she had something to do with the infamous changes to ET (the FBI agents holding walkie-talkies instead of shotguns) as spoofed in the "Free Hate" episode of South Park.

Default 'Charlie's Angels': How to Save the New TV Remake

"Charlie's Angels"
Sony Home Entertainment

Somebody save "Charlie's Angels"! The classic TV series is being rebooted, with former "Smallville" honchos Al Gough and Miles Millar at the helm. We'd be more worried if we hadn't already had our expectations for the series lowered by the last two Drew Barrymore "Angels" movies. In light of "Smallville" and the two movies, here are some things we hope Gough and Millar keep in mind as they try to reinvigorate this girl-power franchise.

Change Up Your Angels ...

On "Smallville," supporting characters tend to come and go, but the four main characters have stayed the same for a long time. However, on the old "Angels" series, an Angel left the show almost every year, and they always replaced her with a new, young actress. In a harsher, grittier TV series, where Angels might get killed, reassigned, or decide to do film work, it makes sense to have a more fluid cast.

... But Pick a Bosley and Stick With Him

While the Angels can be interchangeable, the identity of the girls' handler, Bosley, needs to be a constant. You can't be changing Bosleys midstream, like they did in the second "Angels" movie when they went from Bill Murray to Bernie Mac so, whomever you hire to play Bosley on the show, make sure he's willing to stick around for a while.

Location, Location, Location Shooting

Each season of "Smallville" seems to take place on about five regular sets, and trying to mix up the visuals in a given episode can lead to some random choices of location for various scenes. Obviously, a "Charlie's Angels" franchise reboot is going to have a much bigger budget, so try not to use the same sets over and over again so often.

Don't Stop the Music

This may seem like a no-brainer, but don't change the classic "Angels" tune; that's half of what people remember about the show. If you need to update it a little, that's cool, but don't just do a high-tech, computer-sounding version to show that this is "the future" or a guitar-rock version to show that the show is "extreme."

Do Stop the Dancing

Both "Charlie's Angels" movies featured dance sequences starring all three members. We're assuming this is going to be a more action-heavy, suspenseful type of show and not a "Glee"-style pop culture freak-out, so let's keep the Cameron Diaz-inspired booty-shaking to a minimum.
