Disney has big plans for Tron.

Fans awaiting Tron Legacy, the upcoming 3D sequel to the 1982 cult flick, have already gotten a taste of the studio's elaborate viral marketing campaign for the film.

Thanks to positive fan reaction to the campaign and the movie's teaser trailer, Disney is prepping a big merchandising push and new theme park attractions for the (surprisingly) hot 28-year-old sci-fi franchise.



So what's next for Tron? A TV show, of course.



Blue Sky Digital is reporting that a computer-animated TV series set in the world of Tron Legacy is in the works. According to the site, the show will serve as a "placeholder" to tide fans over between big screen Tron projects.

The series could end up airing on any one of Disney's TV networks, including ABC or, more likely, Disney XD. The studio reportedly hopes to push it out by late 2011 or early 2012.




I love the original Tron for its unique and imaginative visuals, and Tron Legacy looks to be an amazing immersive experience. An action-oriented series set in Tron's slick video game world sounds like a great way to keep the franchise alive, and to possibly push the envelope for visual effects on TV.

It's a long shot, but let's hope Disney can nab some of the movie's high-profile cast members (Jeff Bridges, Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde, John Hurt) to participate in the small screen venture.

"TRON: Uprising" Animated Trailer Debuts

If TRON: Legacy wasn't enough for you and you've become so addicted to the adventures of the Grid that you need a weekly fix, you'll be able to feed your hunger in the summer of 2012.

That's when Disney premieres the animated prequel "TRON: Uprising".






Set between the events of the 1982 original and the 3D holiday blockbuster of 2010, the 10-part "Uprising" tells the story of Beck, a young computer program who unwittingly finds himself leading a revolution against the evil Clu 2.

Along the way, he'll be aided by that hero of heroes, Tron (voiced by Bruce Boxleitner himself!). Plus, we'll also find out how Flynn went into hiding.







In addition to Boxleitner, "Uprising" sports an impressive voice cast:

Elijah Wood
Lance Henriksen
Paul Reubens
Reginald VelJohnson




"TRON: Uprising" premieres in the summer of 2012 on Disney XD, the action-adventure cable channel geared for boys.
