Default Syfy president disses MST3K

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/12/16...arktopus/36501

Quote:
Dave Howe: I think I brought Mystery Science Theater up. I mean it’s been a while actually since anybody – I used to get it all the time, you know, MST3K because quite frankly that was the only thing people ever associated with the network. And they’re, you know, those people that don’t watch still think we’ve got MST3K on our – clearly we haven’t the eight years I’ve been here.

We don’t have any plans to bring it back. You know, we’ve talked about it in the past but not for four or five years. I think the thing about MST3K is – and I’ll ask you the same question as I say to everybody else is did you actually watch more than about, you know, 15 or 20 minutes? It’s one of those kind of one-note amusing things which I’m not sure is sustainable for any length of time or any period of time.

So I don’t think it’s anything that we would necessary do again as an ongoing thing but, you know, we may do it as an event or as a, you know, one off special because I do think there’s some nostalgia around it. And it was very funny.

Default Of COURSE, Dave Howe has no plans to bring "MST3K" back...

...it isn't owned by NBC/Universal, that's why!

In case you haven't noticed, NBC/U, in recent years, has emphasized its own "in-house" programs on virtually all of their cable networks, including "Syfy" (that's why there's going to be a "CHUCK" marathon in a few weeks). The idea is to utilize and make as much money from the series and movies NBC/U currently produces and/or owns in their library by "parking" them on their various cable networks...even "The Weather Channel". It's called "corporate synergy". It's also a bunch of ****.

Your turn....

It's not surprising, considering that Syfy has ceased to be about Sci-Fi with all the horror movies and wrestling they have been putting on the network. I like wrestling, personally, but it doesn't belong there. Also, all of the good shows they had, including Battlestar Galactica, the Stargate series, and especially Farscape, have all been cancelled.

MST3K not sustainable for any length or period of time? Why did it last ten years, then?

Default Thank you, 'steevo'....

...but what did you expect a network executive like Howe to say? "Well, er, I liked it, but my bosses are concentrating on their own agenda for the network, and if I say anything more about it, I'll lose my job, you know?".

What a bullsh*t assessment of MST3K!

Every episode was an event IMO. What other group of writers and actors were doing a two hour scripted program?

Keep showing more terrible D grade movies and stupid ghost hunting shows Syfy. Excellent work.

No, of course I didn't expect him to say anything along those lines. I'm simply giving my assessment of what Howe said about MST3K.

He could have couched his (mindbogglingly blind) criticism of the show in less strident and specific terms if he was worried about not offending his bosses.

All of the MST3K eps I've watched, I've watched ALL the way through and laughed my behind off at all of them. It's a show that has so many references that cross all facets of our culture and really rewards you for paying attention, not only to the dialogue and the action onscreen, but to the society around you.

I freaking love that show.

Default Well, I sure started some sparkling discussion, didn't I?

I was merely using my fictional "quote" as an example of what an executive like Dave Howe might have said, in that kind of situation. What he said, of course, sounded like someone who really never cared for or watched "MST3K". And you're right about that, 'steevo'. However, my "smilie" concerning an appropriate fate for Mr. Howe still stands...

Next!

Sorry, I didn't catch that the quote was "fictional".

I still love the show though, lol.

Oh No

MST3K made Sci-Fi. I can't believe that the guy from SyFy would have the NERVE to say that about a show that's Sci-Fi related rather than something like UFC!
