Default Clearance So Fine could not act "street"

The actor Bumper Robinson is a poor actor who tried too hard to be street. They put him in MC Hammer-type gear and we are supposed to believe he's a thug. He was using outdated street terms like "Funky Fresh" This was 1990, and that term was played out five years earlier. Larenz Tate would have been great in that role. But he always got typecasted as playing a thug.

I'm not fond the of the Clarence So Fine season and given how NBC cancelled the show after that season, other people weren't either. Bumper Robinson needs to be a regular person, regardless of what character they give him, he cannot pull it off. I noticed the terminology was old too for 1990 and any younger person would have made changes to the script to keep the character current with the current lingo.

Clarence wasn't supposed to be a thug, he was to be a regular teen who just hung out with the wrong crowd at first. After a while he changed. Clarence just thought that he was all that and a bag of chips. And he didn't wear MC hammer type clothes, He mostly wore Adidas style windbreaker suits, or jeans.

Ok, Run DMC type clothes. LOL But they did portray him as a thug, especially in his first appearance.

Well everyone was wearing those style of clothing back then. His first appearance was the only episode where he had that persona.

I loved this last season of the show. I like Clearance but all that trying to be overly cook stuff would bug me as a kid. I loved it when Bumper was on A Different World. Poor Bumper. He did a lot of one season stints:

Webster as Curtis (1983-1984)
Night Court as Leon (1985-1986)
Amen as Clearance (1990-1991)
A Different World as Dorian (1992-1993)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as Carter (1995-1996)
Guys Like Us as Jared (1998-1999)
Grownups as Marcus (1999-2000)
What's With Andy as Danny (2001-2002)

But hey, this dude works!

I forgot about him!

Actually, MC Hammer DID make a guest appearance in an episode where Clarence was contemplating quitting school.

He had convinced him that staying in school helps to guarrente him better jobs later when he finishes school. Anyone seen that episode?

Bumper Robinson is arguably the "Black Ted McGinley", in that he's sort of a show closer (as most evident on Amen and A Different World) if not all out killer.
