In my opinion, it was a bit disrespectful when she grabbed her crotch and spit, but for her singing, I believe she was singing the best that she could.

She was only out to mimick baseball players-- do I smell a double-standard ?

She said that she was going to give it a serious try at first, but people were already booing her 3 seconds in so she just went for it and did what we all saw.

In Roseanne's autobiography, My Lives, she said the baseball players actually came up with the idea that she grab herself and spit, mimicking a baseball players's gestures. She wasn't going to do it at first, until they started to egg her on. She said she should have known better-- "Anyone who looks like he's got a spare baseball stored in his cheek and whose teeth are blacked out by chewing tobacco doesn't know what's funny and certainly doesn't know what looks stupid," said Roseanne. When it was time for her to start singing, she realized there would be no music to accompany her and she started to freak. She didn't know you had to start out the song in a really low key if you have any hope of making it through. The more she tried to steady the notes, the more the bottom dropped out. And then she couldn't hear herself because of all the booing that started (there were a LOT of drunk fans there). The notes got higher and higher. Nearing the song's end, she was literally screaming to reach them. At that point, she was starting to get upset at all the booing and decided to let everybody have it. She made the loudest noise she could on the last note, and then decided to go ahead with the crotch/spit thing, trying to make it at least funny at the end, but nobody bought it.

The whole incident is a masterclass in bad staff work and how not to do crisis PR.
  • Only a few months before the incident, the San Diego Padres were bought by Tom Werner; executive producer of the Roseanne Show (and The Cosby Show among others).

After the deal was closed Roseanne and her husband at the time, Tom Arnold, were joking around with him on the set and she volunteered to sing the national anthem at his new baseball team.

The Padres had a scheduled Double Header Promo called The Working Women's Appreciation Day. The Roseanne Show was the #1 TV in the US and she was a "representative" of a working woman. Tom Werner remembered the conversation and asked Roseanne if she wanted to sing the National

Anthem between games. Roseanne was asked if she could sing and she answered sarcastically yes and no one pressed any further.

A week before the event Roseanne and Tom Arnold are on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson". Johnny asks her about about singing the anthem and expresses surprise that she could sing and even warns her that it is a tough song. Tom Arnold, with a smirk on his face, tells Johnny that she will be great as he has heard her practice in the bathroom.

The troll was set. She had no intention of trying to sing well. She approached it as a joke and thought that everyone else would get the joke. She failed to have situational awareness that this was a baseball game and not her show or stand up concert.

At this point her career, her success was at a point that everything she did was "funny". Meaning that she was surrounded by "yes men" and her and Tom Arnold were at the beginning of what proved to be a very toxic relationship. Also being in San Diego which is pretty much a military town is not a good place to jokingly sing the National Anthem.

The spitting and crotch grabbing came about because she was joking with one one the players (Mark Parent to be exact) and was dared to do it.

Everything she did was premeditated but without malice; it just was not thought through; not by her, Tom Werner, or The Padres front office.
