Talking VH1's "I Love the '90s": What shows will they cover?

Quote:
Newsgroups: rec.arts.tv

This fall, like they did with the '70s and '80s (twice on the latter), VH1
will be looking back at '90s pop culture with I Love The '90s. I'm sure
there'll be A LOT of shows and TV events to be featured on there, so here's
what I'm hoping for depending on year:

1990: Beverly Hills 90210, The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Twin
Peaks, COPS, Arsenio Hall
1991: Garfield and Friends (it debuted in the mid-'80s, but its popularity
peaked in the early '90s), In Living Color, America's Funniest Home Videos,
The Real World
1992: American Gladiators, Studs, Baywatch, the Mike Myers/Chris Farley/Adam
Sandler era of Saturday Night Live, Johnny Carson's last Tonight Show, Ross
Perot's campaign infomercials
1993: NYPD Blue, Melrose Place (when Heather Locklear joined), Barney and
Friends, the final episode of Cheers, David Letterman migrating from NBC to
CBS, Home Improvement
1994: My So-Called Life, ER, The X-Files, the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase, the
Tonya/Nancy showdown in Lillehammer
1995: Friends, the debuts of UPN and WB, Absolutely Fabulous, the O.J. trial
1996: The Rosie O'Donnell Show, the 1996 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team
1997: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Princess Diana funeral, Tyson biting a
piece of Holyfield's ear off, Xena: Warrior Princess
1998: Dawson's Creek, Jerry Springer, the final Seinfeld, WWF/WWE Raw, the
Clinton/Lewinsky scandal and the Starr Report being released
1999: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, South Park

Of course not all of them will be included, but you may never know.

And since the '90s was a HUGE decade for television, VH1 might do an "I Love
The '90s Strikes Back" to cover what was missed the first time around.

Any other shows they might do, or have I did them all?

<< 1991: Garfield and Friends (it debuted in the mid-'80s, but its popularity

more like my enjoyment of the show peaked when I was old enough to understand
the adult-oriented jokes.

1990: Saved by the Bell (and the end of cartoons on NBC)
1992: Dan Quayle/Murphy Brown
1995: Who shot Mr. Burns, the moment that changed the focus of The Simpsons
from Bart and his family to Homer and his town.
1996: The start of the Monday Night wars in pro wrestling (nWo)

<< 1999: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, South Park >>
South Park premiered in 97, but the movie came out in 99.

I'm sure there's a lot of non-TV stuff out there too (Kurt Cobain,
Lollapalooza, the 1994 Baseball strike, etc.)

I just think this show is 10 years too early...

isn't it way too soon for I Love The 90's? the 70's and 80's were appropriate subjects because it'd been so long that it was nostalgic, 90's influence is still around for the most part. Two of the biggest series' of the decade (Friends and Frasier) just wrapped up, and when you look on the singles chart, many of the hot artists are ones who were hot in the 90's as well (Usher, Britney, Eminem)

It needs about 5-7 more years before people will start getting nostalgic for the late 1990's, because for the most part, it's still here

others

1992-Dream On (the first REAL hit series on HBO, opening the doors to Sopranos, Sex And The City and co.)
1993-Beavis And Butt-Head
1997-Ellen's coming out episode, completely revolutionizing television
1998-Ally McBeal (this was THE show that year)

I'd like to see a concrete source for this. So far someone just posted it at a newgroup with no source stated.

Seinfeld was such a huge part of the 90s that I think they should add a "Seinfeld Moment of 199-" just like they have the "follicle fads" and "makeout songs" just before commercial breaks.

And one other show MUST be added -- it OWNED the Emmys throughout the 90s -- Frasier.

*hangs self*

Shouldn't they be waiting until 2012 to do something like this? The first "I Love the 80's" special aired in 2002 when 1989 was 13 years ago. So if they waited until 2012 to do it, 1999 would be 13 years ago at that point.

I agree, who honestly are they going to talk to when it comes to "90's nostalgia", Lindsey Lohan? Hilary Duff??

I don't think enough time has passed since 1999 for people to really be getting nostalgic over it

It is true, here is the actual link to the VH1 Website http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/i_love_...s/series.jhtml

To me i think it sounds intresting. The 90's is one of my favorite decades behind the 80's. Because i think both the 80's and 90's had the best movies and music.

well, I like the 90's, but it is waaaaaaaaaay too soon to do a nostalgia-fest over it. The first half, maybe. But who is going to be misty-eyed and nostalgic over late 90's things like Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Pokemon and Teletubbies who isn't too old to be on Disney?

Considering the likes of Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears are still around, I think it is much too soon to do an "I Love The 90's", because technically we're still stuck in the late 90's musically. Most of today's "superstars" are 90's holdovers.

Believe me, I think it would be interesting as well. I just think it's way too soon.

Worse...THey'll get people like the kids on Mike's Short Show (on Disney) to talk for the ILT90's, I bet.

And I agree...The years in the 90's I'm getting nostalgic for now is 1990, 1991 and 1992. They were 12, 13 and 14 years ago...A pretty long time ago now...But geez. 1999 ended 4˝ years ago...Waaaaaaaay too soon.

What d'they got next, "I Love The First Half of the 2000's"?

I think they should do I Love The 60's before they worry about I Love The 90's.

The only years I'd be interested in right now would be 1990 - 1994. This is 2004.. way too soon to be getting all nostalgic about a decade we've just left.

I am nostalgic for the early 90's. But that is it. I am not nostalgic for the late 90's, it's not that long ago.

1992 - TLC, my favorite girl group of all time. Their music was the bomb back in the day. Knowing VH1, they will ignore their great music, and only talk about Left Eye burning that football player's house.
