The biggest part of the budget to any Hal Wallis movie with Elvis, was Elvis's salary. 1 million dollars. So all Hal could afford to hire for his co stars were TV actresses, who demanded much less than the big screen stars. Donna was chosen for Frankie and Johnny. Elvis said he really loved working with her, that she was a sweetheart of a gal. R.I.P.Mrs Douglas.

I had the privilege of meeting her a few times over the last 25 or so years. Very nice lady. A truly dear soul and very special Christian. She is now with the Lord. Bless you Donna. You will be very missed.

What sad news. Donna was my favorite on The Beverly Hillbillies. A sweet, kind soul.

I always liked her and am sorry that she's no longer with us. However; I think it should be added that one thing she had in common with her most famous role was that she DID love critters [and critters can TELL if you don't especially onscreen]. However; there were a couple of exceptions for good reason which I'll mention: once she was due to film a scene in the 'see-ment' pond riding a hippo and the hippo in question could only be 'tamed' by having its elephant companion that it had grown up with as close as possible. Long-short is that after some hemming and hawing, they got the elephant's trunk into the water [just out of camera range] to get the hippo happy and the two celebrated by giving into natures call to a HUGE extent in the water. Since it was getting close to sundown, the props folks decided they'd better get that shot in a hurry and neglected to tell Miss Douglas what these two had done in the water- just saying that the water was now a pretty shade of green. Being a pro, she rode the hippo and did the shot as they wanted but the next day, found out that happened AND gave the director a good whack! I just hope she was able to get a long shower before going home. RIP, Miss Douglas whose beauty was more than skin deep.

I was devastated by the news of her death even though she was blessed with a longer than average life. Donna was probably my number one favorite as a child. People born after TBH just have no idea of personally popular Donna Douglas was with the public during the show's run, she was on scores of magazine covers including every one of the TBH's 9 TV Guide covers which has to make her among the ten or twenty women most often on TV Guide.
Donna was always so kind and open to her fans, I never got to meet her but she signed for me twice in the mail and I've collected clippings on her for decades, so sad to add obituaries to my files and scrapbooks on her. RIP to one of the most beautiful women in tv history and a lovely soul who won't be forgotten. I was very pleased to see the Emmys gave her a major place on the memorial reel this year, I don't think her passing got the press and tv coverage it deserved given she starred on one of TV's greatest hits for almost a decade. |

I would love to have seen the tribute to her on the Emmys. Unfortunately, I haven't watched the Emmys in years.

I only watched the Emmys (I've pretty much given up on current acting tv series so I haven't seen the Emmys myself before in many years) in hopes of seeing Donna in a memorial reel on the show and frankly was getting stressed they would snub her as the "Over the Rainbow" song went on and and on and no Donna but they saved her til near the end and she was the last person to get a "voice" (like all the major performers got in the tribute) other than Leonard Nimoy who closed the reel. I was happy the remembered her though saddened they overlooked Melody Patterson (F Troop), Yvonne Craig (Batman), and Lynn Anderson (Lawrence Welk show and scores of variety and country music appearances) although they sort of tributes do tend to overlook a few notables.
Haven't checked but the tribute reel may be on youtube, as people usually do tend to post those there. |

It is amazing to me that Hollywood can still pat itself on the back and give out Emmys when TV is just so terrible now.
