Members and Moderator,
I think Barbara Feldon was so attractive as Agent 99 in GET SMART. Agent 99 was really the smart one behind Maxwell Smart 'Don Adams.' What is Barbara Feldon up to these days? Wasn't Barbara Feldon a guest star in an episode of MAD ABOUT YOU? ------------------ M.R. Mindy Roberts |

You're right, she was attractive. She rarely does much acting anymore. After all, she is in her late 60's now.
Besides that Fox remake of Get Smart she has guest starred on a couple of series. One was indeed Mad About You where she played a spy. |

Hi all,
Yes, Ms. Feldon ("99") was born on March 12, *1941*. "Sorry about that," Perderabo. ------------------ Later, Art |

That's her showbiz birthdate, not her real one. SUPER-UNNECESSARY TRIVIA ALERT: Barbara Feldon graduated from Carnegie Tech's drama program in 1955, when she was probably not 14 years old, and won the big prize on "The $64,000 Question" in 1957. Don Adams, by the way, claims to have been born in 1927, but that isn't true, either; he was born in '23. (Only seven years after the late Ed "the Chief" Platt. If we can believe Platt's agent.)

You notice how there were a lot of female KAOS agents and other women on the show were more...well, up-front, with their sex appeal? (Dressed more provocatively, if nothing else.) At that time that set them apart as the "bad" women, and 99 as the "good" one (except maybe for Drs. Simon and Steel since they worked for CONTROL)...today the more provocative style is the norm for television, even for characters working in professional fields.
I suppose you could say that was one way 99 was a good role model. It often seemed like the other women's blatant sex appeal was "upstaging" 99...at least distracting Max. Particularly in the later seasons. But I know a lot of men loved Barbara, and she had been a model. |

It's sad (and possibly sexist) that 99 never got a real name while 86 did.

I don't see that as a negative sexist thing that 99 wasn't given a name on the show. In fact, I think it makes here even more alluring and mysterious with just a number for identification. She was certainly unique in that. And a lot of the other male agents were only known and called by their numbers.

As a real person, 99 has a real name, only a few people alive know it. Her mother, the Chief, and her husband, 86. Just because the Admiral's snoring drowned out her name to the guests during the wedding does not mean that the officiating judge did not say it or that Max did not hear it. And even if he didn't hear it, he saw it when he applied for the wedding licence or signed the wedding certifcate, or certainly found it out during the time since they married.
When, during "Rebecca of Funny-Folk Farm," Max said he didn't know 99's name, he did what a spy is trained to do: he lied. Max is well aware that he must protect 99's identity. He wasn't expecting the question, so he just told the first, easiest lie that came to mind. Would you believe it? Would you believe that I have too much time on my hands? |
