That's because this version of the 1st episode never aired.

They obviously decided they didn't like "other Joanie" and reshot her scenes with Erin Moran. And that's why we've always known Erin Moran to be Joanie.

This happens more than you know.

Susan Neher from the L, AS HD "pilot" is better looking than Erin Moran when they were both young, but Moran's vices started to take a toll on her body and appearance by the later years of HD (as she herself said). Eventually those vices claimed Moran's life.

Erin Moran died of head and neck cancer.

No illegal narcotics or substances were the cause of her death and none were found in her home.

smoking and drinking - which Moran did for years - raises your chance of cancer significantly.

'Happy Days' Very First Episode Was More Controversial Than You Remember
  • The first episode of Happy Days , titled "All the Way," has received complaints for its sexist undertones and racial slurs.
  • The episode's portrayal of women as objects and the use of derogatory language contribute to its controversy.
  • Ultimately, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) did not find any breaches of broadcast codes in the episode.

I hate today. "It was wrong then and it is wrong now" = showing no regard for people of the past's different circumstances.

Racial slurs? This could not be related to Pat Morita's character, he was not in the first 2 seasons. And Ethnic is not the same as Racial. So what was it?

There's nothing like going back 50 years to stir up controversies. Why not delete every past sitcom, just wipe it all, bury the past entirely. Cancel culture, at it again.

MeTv aired a second season episode one time, and on Richie's bedroom wall was a poster for a race that had a confederate flag on it, but it was digitally blurred out.

I'm no fan of the confederate flag and what it stands for, but I do object to politically correcting a 1970s TV show that was clearly not racist in any way.

It’s not anything to do with Pat Morita. It’s because of the use of a term which is considered offensive.

Sorry for the bump, but does anyone still have this at all. I see the one on Internet Archive has been taken down.

After wading through a couple of articles on this controversy, I found that the term in question is Eskimo, a descriptor related to ethnicities. The same word that resulted in Dr. Seuss' "McElligot's Pool" going out of print.

In neither case was the intent of the writer to be derogatory; the calling out of these works has the unintended result of widely publicizing the word's past use in cases where ordinarily it would scarcely be noticed ("Eskimo fish," come on. Seuss books have had edits that were more complicated than that would've entailed).
