Default Danielle Fishel says producers treated her like she was 'crazy' for having...

...'boundaries': 'Am I difficult?'

Story by Raechal Shewfelt

Fishel starred on “Boy Meets World” as a child, but she was a producer on the sequel series.

Key Points
  • Danielle Fishel said she was treated differently as an adult on her series Girl Meets World, than she had been as a child on Boy Meets World.
  • Fishel said she had been more go-with-the-flow when she was younger.
  • On the new series, she took a more direct approach with people, which they found ‘difficult.’

Former child star Danielle Fishel remembers that there were some big changes in the way she was treated while making teen show Boy Meets World, from 1993 to 2000, when she was still a kid, and in the spinoff, Girl Meets World, which premiered in 2015. Not all of them were seen as positive.

“I had been a real go-with-the-flow, not ruffle any feathers, be so easy to work with, a consummate professional,” Fishel, 45, said on Tuesday’s episode of the I Choose Me with Jennie Garth podcast. “And essentially what that meant is the producers felt like they could tell me to do whatever they wanted me to do, and I would never push back.”

She continued, “And when we got to Girl Meets World, I think I had been so used to, in my personal life, going away from that, that when we went to the set, and I was now a new person, an adult, a grownup, who had thoughts and opinions of her own, and wasn’t incredibly shy about sharing them,” it was surprising to some people.

Fishel, who played the beloved character of Topanga, clarified that she hadn’t been “in front of groups of people chastising somebody else’s decisions.”

Instead, she would tell someone on an individual basis when she had something to say.

“It was more like, when something happened I felt uncomfortable with, I would then make time to go in and talk to the people I felt uncomfortable with and say, ‘Can I talk to you about something? This makes me feel uncomfortable,’” Fishel recounted to Garth. “And the response was, ‘Well, she’s gone crazy! Have you seen what’s going on with her? She’s gone crazy. She’s got rules and boundaries about the way we’re allowed to talk to her and to touch her and to interact with her. It’s shocking!’”

Fishel, who was a producer and star of the later series that centered on Topanga, started to feel like maybe others were right.

“There was a part of me that was like, ‘Am I? Am I difficult?’ And having to then decide, ‘Okay, well, I guess, if this is difficult,’” Fishel said. “The alternative doesn’t make me feel like I can live with myself, so I guess I just have to be difficult. And that has to be okay with me. I guess I am a difficult person, even though I didn’t think any of the things I was asking for or requesting was difficult.”

Fishel said she did ask herself if she wasn’t being too aggressive, maybe inserting herself into conversations that weren’t about her.

“Unless it’s protecting a kid from something, maybe I need to mind my own business if it doesn’t actually pertain to me,” she thought. “There were times when I thought, maybe I overstepped a little there, but … I had a producer credit on the show.”

Because of her having a prior history, I can't blame her for whatever her frame of mind became. She knew what to be on the lookout for where inappropriate behavior was concerned.

God bless you and Danielle always!!!
