USA World Cup 1994 was the tournament that had it all: Diego Maradona's spectacular celebration, a total water ban, a sweltering heatwave, punches on the sideline, spies, player revolts and a literal murder.

With the 2026 World Cup returning to the United States, Canada and Mexico, we look back at the original American World Cup experiment: how FIFA pulled off the impossible, how the tournament kickstarted the MLS as we know it, and why 1994 remains the most bizarre, dramatic and underrated World Cup in history.

And it ended the only way it could: Roberto Baggio stepping up to win the World Cup final for Italy against Brazil, and skying his penalty into the Pasadena sky. Head bowed. Ponytail drooping. The most iconic image in World Cup history.

By every measure, USA '94 should have been a catastrophe. Instead, it became the most attended World Cup in history, a record that still stands today, over 30 years later. More than 3.5 million fans packed stadiums across America for a sport the country supposedly didn't care about.

So how did the most chaotic, scandal-ridden, controversy-soaked tournament in football history also become its greatest commercial triumph? This is the story of how spectacular failure became unlikely success.
