I think that is a wise choice. I've just seen the pilot. Not impressed. Right off the bat, blah music. No impressive theme tune. Blonde, blue-eyed Mary has blue eyes all right but barely concealed extremely dark hair. Although this version was supposed to stick to the books, they are sticking more to the real life story by apparently having Baby Carrie born in Kansas territory rather than being two or three already on the trip to Kansas. A Native American Indian family has been added who were never in the books. Dr. Tan is well portrayed but shows up way too early in the story. Mr. Edwards is a homicidal drunk. So far it is bleak and depressing, not at all the warm family feeling of the original series. The wolves were pretty good for CGI.

Dean Butler Gives his Thoughts on New "Little House on the Prairie" Series
Original "Little House on the Prairie" Actor has Thoughts on Netflix Reboot
by Raechal Shewfelt July 17, 2026 Dean Butler is cheering on — and maybe singing along — to the new Netflix adaptation of "Little House on the Prairie". The actor portrayed main character Laura Ingalls’ eventual husband, Almanzo Wilder, on the NBC series over its last four seasons, from 1979 to 1983. “Something that I love about the program that I think would have been really fun in the original, which we did not do, other than in church. But something that I think is really wonderful about this is the family singing that is going on,” Butler said this week in an Instagram video. “Writers have rolled in songs that Pa played on his fiddle and the family is singing along, and they really are doing it beautifully.” He noted that the music was in “the spirit of Laura’s books. She wrote it that way. There was a lot of that in the books.” https://ew.com/original-little-house...eboot-12021842 |

Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie swaps the original’s comfort for sunlit joylessness
The new adaptation, though visually exquisite, swaps the story's much-loved comfort for dutiful tedium. |
