Ugh, for we people of Greek descent, Turkey is the absolute last country we'd want to see win anything. Very long history of conflict and ethnic cleansing, especially since 1974 involving Cyprus.
In fact we Greeks in the U.S. don't acknowledge the names Turkey or Turkiye, we always refer to that place as "Asia Minor." |

The thing of pride for the Greek people was the winning of Greece's independence in the 1820s to early 1830s from the Ottoman Empire (I can see a footstool joke coming soon...!)
Even I don't know the history as well as I should, but in modern times Cyprus and the western part of what is now known as Turkey had been heavily populated by Greek (Hellenic) people, who were forced out. Anyway, yes the Armenian Genocide is widely considered one of the greatest tragedies of the century. |
