And that's more profitable these days than having a rock station where no other rock station exists and there are already enough hip-hop/R&B stations. They'd rather stop playing music on the station and simulcast AM talk radio than cater to a demographically irrelevant audience. New York radio is a wasteland these days. There are few if any stations that play anything recorded before 1982.

That's because radio conglomerates based in New York City own every other station in America, thanks to the 1996 Telecommunications Act! President Clinton signed that media deregulation bill into law on February 8, 1996 . . . another dark day for rock and roll.

As a Beatles aficionado since childhood, John Lennon’s murder is high on my list, but for me, the darkest days in rock are things like the Station nightclub fire, the Colectiv nightclub fire, the mass shooting at the Damageplan concert that killed Dimebag Darrell and five others (ironically 24 years to the day after John was killed), The Who concert stampede, the Pearl Jam concert stampede, and the Bataclan terror attack.

For the relatively small number of plane crashes that occur, it amazes me the number of famous people who have died in that manner. In music, that would include Rick Nelson.

Also don't forget Jim Croce, who died in a plane crash right after takeoff in Louisiana on September 20, 1973.
