Which do you consider the blackest day in rock and roll? Of course we are talking about the tragic passings of some of rock's greatest legends, or other tragic days which maked the loss of our innocence (such as Altamont). But this is not limited to the demise of rock and pop stars, it can also include other equally tragic events as certain lipsync-ing artists or other dubious achievements!

If I gave it more thought I could probably come up with more, but off the top of my head it's a toss-up between John Lennon's murder and Kurt Cobain's suicide. I was older and more aware when Kurt killed himself so I think that affected me more, wondering why he felt the need to do it. Lennon's murder was unquestionably a major dark day period. I don't remember how much I knew of him or the Beatles at the time, but I knew what happened had an impact.

Here's a handful of events that could easily be among the blackest days in rock.Except that all of them are from one year - 1970!

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young fly apart (July 22)
The Beatles break up (April 10)
Emerson, Lake and Palmer get together (whenever)
Jimi Hendrix's death (September 18)
Janis Joplin's death (October 4)
Queen Latifah's birth (March 18)
"Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" begins a month-long stay atop the singles chart (January 3)

the announcement of no more Isle of Wight festivals in the UK (August 31)
Dylan releases Self -Portrait (circa June 15)
a festival in Germany that went bad -one of Hendrix's last gigs (September 5, I think)

Normally, being the Hendrix fan that I am, I'd pick it (if we can only choose one), but because it was cold-blooded murder, and one of the most peaceful caring men on the planet, I'd have to go with Lennon's death. It also affected a much larger portion of the population. I remember everyone walking around sad that week - it was like when Diana died.

I would say it's a toss up between John Lennon and Elvis. I think they were more influential than the others and their deaths seem to be the most talked about/remembered by most people.

I chose the plane crash of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper. That incident was like the first end of innocence in the music area. Well, except when Dorothy Dandridge killed herself, but as far as tragic deaths go, I consider what happened to Buddy, Ritchie and Big Bopper the blackest day in history.

Second would be when John Lennon got shot, third when Selena was shot and fourth when Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash.

There are quite a few sad days in rock history to choose from here. There is the break up of the Beatles and the deaths of Jim Morrison, Bon Scott, John Bonham and George Harrison, but the saddest day of all was the day that John Lennon was taken from us.

He was the greatest songwriter who has ever lived. There will never be another Lennon.
