The World of David the Gnome looked like the gentlest Nick Jr. comfort cartoon ever made. Underneath the soft music and the mushroom houses, it was one of the strangest children's shows ever imported to American television: a Spanish and Dutch environmental fable about medicine, aging, grief, and the quiet beauty of the natural cycle, built around a three hundred and ninety nine year old fox riding woodland doctor.

In this episode we trace the wild international pipeline behind it. A nineteen seventy six Dutch book that pretended gnomes were a real biological species. A Spanish studio run by the man they called the Spanish Walt Disney. A Canadian English dub with a startling Miramax credit. Prestige voice casting from Tom Bosley and Christopher Plummer. And the series finale that the creator himself called one of the biggest mistakes of his career, because he accidentally wrote his hero permanently out of the franchise by turning him into a tree.
