Somebody argued that Kirk Cameron, whether it be because genetics or by environment, is somebody who is more dispositioned towards authoritarianism. Basically, they crave in-groups and anything which reaffirms their already-decided worldview. It's not that religion causes authoritarianism, but that authoritarians thrive in the structure.

For these types, fundamentalist/evangelical Christianity allows one to feel morally superior to other groups. They preach love as those with the authority to love, but practice hate because the others are inherently lesser.

He alienated his cast, dictated scripts, and got a co-star fired. How exactly did Kirk Cameron become the most toxic teen star of the '90s, and why did the Hollywood studio system actively protect him?

I’ve got to wonder if a large reason Growing Pains doesn’t do well in syndication or streaming (aside from second-tier services like Howdy and Plex) is because Kirk Cameron became such an unpleasant person. Has he tainted his reputation so much that Warner Bros can’t even sell the show on, “Hey, check it out — a young Brad Pitt! And there’s Matthew Perry! And whoa, is that baby Leonardo DiCaprio!?”

I grew up a huge fan of the show. It was a top-five favorite for me. (I even succeeded in begging my parents to take me to see Like Father, Like Son because I thought Kirk Cameron was so cool.) I’d probably watch reruns more often today if Cameron wasn’t so alienating. I can normally separate the art from the artist, but dude’s just a villain to me now.

without Cameron, GP would likely have had a bump from Ashley J's renewed fame as a voice actor.

I have no problem with people's devotion to any religion. Its actually a good thing. Also if a script goes against you beliefs its ok to talk to the producer for changes. Happens in many sitcoms. My issue with Cameron is how judgmental he is against anyone that disagrees with him. He rants against cancel culture and portrays himself a victim when book clubs or libraries wont book him to promote his books. Yet he has no problem being executioner for anything he disagrees with. Its sort of a demented form of Christianity condemning everyone around you while living in a glass house.
It was a sitcom to make people chuckle. Growing Pains was like the Brady Bunch of the 1980s. His heart is too full of hate.

Lisa Whelchel is a devoted Christian that has numerous gospel albums. Once she nixed a script of Blair having pre-marital sex. I admire her for her beliefs even if I may not agree with everything she does. The producers just gave the script to another cast member. Lisa was also fine being religious in the 2 part episode of her begging her cousin not to become a nun. Lisa did not stomp around the set demanding changes to all the scripts to she objected to.
