Default Mayim Bialik Says She Suffered Weeks of Terrible Side Effects After One GLP-1...

...Injection

Mayim Bialik is opening up about her experience taking a GLP-1 medication, revealing that a single dose left her battling severe gastrointestinal symptoms that lasted for weeks.

In an essay published by The Free Press on Friday, June 5, the actress and former Jeopardy! host detailed why she decided to try a GLP-1 drug and the intense reaction that followed. Bialik, 50, said she initially sought the medication not to lose weight, but at the recommendation of several doctors who suggested it might help alleviate symptoms associated with autoimmune conditions she has dealt with for years.

"I went on a weight-loss drug because a doctor told me it might help ease symptoms I've struggled with for basically my entire adult life," Bialik wrote.

Bialik, who rose to fame as the star of Blossom before earning four Emmy nominations for her role on The Big Bang Theory, reflected on her long and complicated relationship with body image in the essay. She wrote that she was largely unconcerned about her weight as a child, but began gaining weight after being prescribed medication as a teenager.

Over time, she developed what she described as a sense of shame around her body and a disordered relationship with food.

She also shared that early menopause contributed to weight gain in recent years, though she stressed that losing weight was not the primary reason she agreed to try the medication. Instead, she said doctors believed the drug's anti-inflammatory properties might help address symptoms related to a series of diagnoses, including Graves' disease, connective tissue disease, mast cell activation syndrome, Sjögren's syndrome and dysautonomia.

After years of trying various treatments, Bialik said three separate doctors recommended a GLP-1 medication. Hoping it might offer relief, she agreed to try it.

What followed, she wrote, was far worse than she anticipated. "I took one shot of the lowest dose of a synthetic GLP-1, and to say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement," Bialik recalled.

She described experiencing explosive diarrhea, severe bloating and cramping, full-body aches and an inability to keep down food or water. At one point, she said she required IV fluids after becoming unable to stay hydrated.

"For the first two days, I ate maybe one cup of rice and half a banana," she wrote. "I couldn't even keep electrolyte drinks down."

Bialik said she remained in constant contact with her prescribing physician throughout the ordeal and was surprised when medical professionals told her that severe side effects were not uncommon. She later learned that nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are among the most frequently reported side effects associated with GLP-1 medications, she wrote.

The Mayo Clinic notes that while GLP-1 medications have helped many patients lose weight, researchers continue to study potential long-term effects, including loss of muscle mass, reduced bone density and other health impacts that may emerge with prolonged use.

Despite the physical toll, Bialik said the experience also revealed how deeply ingrained concerns about weight remained for her.

"And yet, in the depth of my misery—my exhausted body, my aching joints, another pair of ruined underwear—a piercing, devastating thought occurred to me: At least you might lose some weight," she wrote.

Ultimately, Bialik decided not to continue taking the medication and gave away the remaining doses she had purchased.

Still searching for answers, she said she eventually visited a gastroenterologist, who told her that while her reaction had been dramatic, it was not unusual. The doctor advised her to expect additional digestive issues for weeks because of the medication's long half-life, according to the essay.

The experience also gave Bialik a new appreciation for people living with chronic gastrointestinal conditions, she wrote. During the worst of her symptoms, she said she struggled to leave the house and often avoided eating or drinking before going anywhere out of fear of another episode.

"There are people who often live in shame of their gastrointestinal challenges, who seem vague when they cancel plans, who disappear from events without explanation," Bialik wrote. "I now recognize the deep pain and embarrassment that comes from a body that betrays you in ways you can't explain to other people at a dinner party."

Weeks after taking the injection, Bialik said she was still experiencing lingering symptoms.

But she ended her essay reflecting on a complicated realization about body image and the pressure to lose weight, particularly in Hollywood.

She wrote that social media feeds are saturated with advertisements and influencer testimonials, while celebrities frequently appear noticeably thinner on red carpets and magazine covers amid the rise in GLP-1 drugs' popularity. She also described knowing women in Los Angeles who take the drugs despite not being considered overweight, highlighting the intense pressure many feel to become thinner.

After leaving her gastroenterologist's office following the experience, Bialik wrote that she caught a glimpse of herself in a reflection and noticed physical changes she had long wanted.

"I did not see under my first chin that second chin on which I had been fixating for months—because it wasn't there," she wrote. "My cheekbones were visible."
