Beginning in the 1980's it was truly a banner year for cartoons and while the classic cartoons like Scooby-Doo and The Smurfs were huge in popularity we would see a new way of marketing new cartoons and that would be cartoons based on toy lines. And if you looked at it from a different vision the cartoons helped the toy lines sell. Starting with Strawberry Shortcake which was popular during the 80's they would develop a new Strawberry Shortcake special every spring and it helped market Strawberry Shortcake toys a lot. Then when My Little Pony And Friends debuted in 1986 this cartoon was indeed a smart move because not only did this cartoon help market My Little Pony toys it also boosted the sales of Potato Head Kids toys and Moondreamers dolls which also cartoon episodes in the My Little Pony And Friends show as well. And when Maxie's World debuted in 1989 Hasbro began selling even more Maxie dolls and that's when toys based on cartoons sold very well. In the boys action figure toylines you saw cartoons based on GI Joe and He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe and just like with girls toys with cartoon series the old college try in the 80's was "make a cartoon "sell more toys to attract people" and it worked and these cartoons were not only meant to sell more toys they indeed feel like a animated commercial for the toy which is what also happened to Jem and Rainbow Brite and Lady Lovelylocks And The Pixietails and surprisingly Barbie who had videos of episodes of Barbie And The Rockers and Barbie And The Sensations and I think DIC Entertainment could've easily made an 80's Barbie cartoon series. But today this trend continues so much in cartoons on TV but animated movies too repeating the same treatment
