Default John Stamos reveals the real reason he’ll never play Uncle Jesse again

Story by Nicole Moore

John Stamos just revealed some information that Full House fans are sure to find disappointing.

In a March 2026 interview with Deadline Hollywood, alongside the cast and crew of his upcoming horror comedy film, Drag, Stamos was asked if he'd ever return to play his Full House character, Jesse Katsopolis, better known as Uncle Jesse. Stamos portrayed the rock-and-roll-loving character throughout Full House's eight-season run, which ended in 1995. The 62-year-old actor reprised the role for the Netflix reboot, Fuller House, which ran for five seasons until 2020, per IMDb.

While speaking to Deadline Hollywood, Stamos referenced that his Full House and Fuller House co-star Bob Saget, who played Jesse's brother-in-law Danny Tanner, died in 2022 at the age of 65. According to Stamos, Saget had jokingly shared his morbid plan for another Full House revival after Fuller House wrapped up.

"Saget's passed away now, and he used to do a joke before he died. 'You can do Fullest House with just me and an urn on the fireplace,'" said Stamos to Deadline Hollywood.

He then shared he's not interested in playing wholesome roles like Uncle Jesse after filming Drag, wherein he plays a villainous character.

"After playing this role, I'm never going backward. This is forward. I mean, you know, this is where I'm at with my career. I did just another show, that's not like this, but in this vein, and that's where I'm going," said Stamos in the March 2026 interview.

John Stamos Shared How He Was Able to Accept That Uncle Jesse Was His Most Recognizable Role

Throughout his four decades in the entertainment industry, Stamos has appeared in popular projects like You, Scream Queens, General Hospital, and ER, per IMDb. However, he's still arguably most recognized for his role as Uncle Jesse.

In a 2023 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Stamos suggested he was initially bothered by fans only seeing him as his Full House counterpart. He said, however, he was given some perspective when he worked with late actorJames Earl Jones in the Broadway production of The Best Man in 2012. He referenced that Jones provided the voice for iconic Star Wars villain, Darth Vader.

"One of the moments was when I worked with James Earl Jones and here I am on stage with the greatest living actor. As we're walking out the stage door the first thing I hear, 'Uncle Jesse, Uncle Jesse, say Have Mercy!'" recalled Stamos in the 2023 interview. "And I couldn't look at the guy man. And he was standing next to me and just as I was just ready to throw up, I look over and somebody had their phone and they put it up to James, and said, 'James say Luke I am your father.' And we both looked at each other. I said, 'F--k it. That's it.' I'm never worrying about Uncle Jesse and all that stuff again.

^^^ If I were to meet John Stamos, I would probably be the one who would make him smile because I would not be asking about his "Have mercy!" phrase. Instead, my question for him is if he answers the phone in real life the same way that he did it on the Full House show. Whenever the phone rang during the show and he answered it, instead of saying, "Hello?" he would always say, "Talk to me!" I don't know of any other person who answers a ringing phone in such a way.

God bless you and him always!!!

Holly
