Question Golden Girls jokes that didn’t land

Reddit had a thread on this and it was surprising that people came up with so many. Like when Dorothy responded to Rose saying that she was going to replace her co-worker’s dog: “Rose, you don’t even like bringing me my slippers.” It fell flat with the studio audience.

The show is so funny but that joke wasn't a good one.

Some jokes while funny at the time do not hold up for people that did not watch in real time. In an episode around 1989 Dorothy cracks a joke that is is upset because she can't make sense of those Obsession commercials. Unless you were alive and watching TV in 1989 you did not see or remember those Calvin Klien Obsession commercials.
Another one was when Sopia says "How dumb do you think I am, do I look like Donna Rice? Its all 80s trivia that unless you were alive and watching you would not get these jokes. I bet most people today do not even know who Donna Rice was.

Donna Rice was the model that destroyed Senator Gary Hart's political future. He was runner up for the 1984 Democrat nomination and probably would have been the nominee in 1988. The entire episode is written around that scandal. Except Blanche did not have an affair with the politician but everyone thinks she did because its in the paper.

I hated the line in Season 05 about the oatmeal raisin cookies when Dorothy said, “As long as we own them.” Dumb.

Well, if you know who the people are/were, you’d get a laugh. In reruns now it may lose something in the translation. My fav obscure joke would be “Ruth Buzzi as “Evita”!”
