Richard Kline being written off the show for 4 weeks as punishment - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Does anybody know or remember the full backstory behind this? He was apparently, written off the show for like I said, four weeks after he wanted to talk about how to develop his character.

Yes, I remember an interview with Kline on a Chicago radio station about 20 years ago stated the reason as mentioned in Reddit article. He brushed it off and learned his lesson I remember he added.

What's interesting is how little they paid him. Was he not only making $1000 per episode? Granted his character was never supposed to be on the show and after the puppy episode they decided to add him sporadically. But his role increased post 1980 drama and the last 2 seasons he almost was a regular cast member. Was he still only making $1000 per episode?

It increased in season 3

Never heard about this until now, It almost seemed like on that show if you disagreed with the producers of the show and the company you would be harshly punished like Suzanne was during season 5

They probably needed him to get more screen time since Suzanne was no longer there
