Eric Dane to Guest Star on "Brilliant Minds" Season 2

It will be art imitating life on an upcoming episode of "Brilliant Minds" as Eric Dane is set for a key guest-starring role on Season 2 of the NBC drama series.

Dane, who revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with ALS, will appear as Matthew in episode 209, a heroic firefighter who struggles to share his ALS diagnosis with his family.

While preparing for a "Grey’s Anatomy" guest arc that mirrors her own health journey, Jamie-Lynn Sigler is praising other working actors dealing with illness.

The actress recently said she “was thrilled” to see Eric Dane appear in a November episode of NBC‘s "Brilliant Minds" as a firefighter coming to terms with his ALS diagnosis, after the actor revealed he has the same disease back in April.

“I think to be able to be in this moment of his life and still get to act, still get to tell his story, and still do what he loves, despite what’s happening to his body — I was thrilled for him and others that are like him to have that representation,” she told The Independent.

“That’s a gift to give to him for so many reasons and to other people as well.”

Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, PEOPLE confirms. Dane became a star with his role as Dr. Mark Sloan — a.k.a. McSteamy — in "Grey’s Anatomy". Dane's death comes 10 months after he went public with his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Dane died Thursday, Feb. 19, the actor's family confirms to PEOPLE. "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," reads a statement from Dane's family. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."

"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
