It took several attempts to the get stadium off the ground with the Pilots of the MLB crashing before King County could even break ground. In 1969, Seattle entered Major League Baseball with the arrival of the Seattle Pilots. Their home was Sick’s Stadium, an older minor league ballpark hurriedly expanded for the majors while the city worked toward building a future domed stadium.

The result was one of the strangest stadium stories in MLB history.

Construction was still underway during the Pilots’ home opener. The seating expansion fell behind schedule, facilities struggled to handle Major League crowds, and even the commissioner questioned whether the stadium was truly ready for baseball at that level.

By the end of the season, the Pilots were in serious financial trouble. Before the 1970 season could begin, the franchise was sold and moved to Milwaukee, becoming the Brewers. Sick’s Stadium had served as a regular Major League home for only one season.

It is from the WHDH TV in Boston broadcast, with Ken Coleman and Ned Martin on play by play and Johnny Pesky on analysis.

This was a wild one at Sick's Stadium, the Red Sox and Pilots battling for 5 hours and 52 minutes before a victor was crowned.

The Red Sox scored in the seventh on a Reggie Smith home run, and the Pilots answered with a Steve Hovley RBI single in the eighth.

You had to go all the way to the 19th inning for the next bit of scoring: Carl Yastrzemski with an RBI double for Boston, and, of course, Jim Pagliaroni with an RBI single for Seattle.

But in the top of the 20th, the Red Sox' Joe Lahoud hit a two-run homer and Russ Gibson added an RBI single, with the Pilots only managing a Tommy Harper solo homer in the bottom half.

Notes: In between taking notes, Jim Bouton worked two scoreless innings for the Pilots, the 13th and 14th ... Both teams' leadoff hitters, Syd O'Brien for Boston and Harper for Seattle, went 3 for 9 ... Fifteen pitchers were used ...
