ESPN and NFL reach blockbuster billion-dollar deal
ESPN pays the NFL around $2.7 billion per year and has the rights to two Super Bowls in 2027 and 2031. As evidenced by how long the discussions dragged on, the contractual language is said to be complicated. The NFL may receive up to 10 percent of ESPN equity, sources confirmed. |

NFL has acquired a stake in CBS, too
ESPN is not the only NFL rightsholder that will be partially owned by the league, as the league has reportedly acquired a stake in CBS. |

No mas, no mas! Congress needs to step in and get control of this situation. The NFL operates as an unregulated monopoly serving no one's interest but the owners. The AFL/NFL merger should never have been approved now is the time to revisit the entire matter. What does the public get in return for allowing this monopoly to continue. Beginning now Congress needs to lay the law down:
1. No more franchise relocations without regulatory approval. 2. All home and road games will be televised over the air in market. No exceptions. 3. All postseason games will be broadcast over the air, no exceptions. The league owners don't have to agree, but if the owners have a problem break the monopoly up, let them operate the way other companies in the entertainment industry operate. |

ESPN giving the NFL a 10% stake is only the beginning of the sports media's acquiescence to power.

Conversely, the NFL will have an opportunity to increase its stake at the same time.

ESPN hit with major layoffs after merging with NFL Network
The layoffs come five months after the NFL took a 10% stake in ESPN as part of a deal that made NFL Network part of the Worldwide Leader in Sports. In a memo to staffers Tuesday, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro wrote: “Over the past several months, we’ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired into ESPN. Throughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structure to best position us for the future. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today.” ALSO:

The network has drastically restructured following its recent merger with the NFL Network and sweeping Disney corporate cuts. By consolidating its production footprint in Bristol and letting go of numerous established anchors and analysts, ESPN is pivoting away from deep benches of traditional specialists to prioritize a smaller, centralized lineup. |
