...That Was Offered? Apparently, NBC wanted her and Kadeem Hardison to headline a Whitley & Dwayne spinoff after A Different World ended but Jasmine was tired of playing the character. She wanted to do movies and different things.

Jasmine Guy has reflected openly on her decision to decline a Whitley and Dwayne spinoff following the conclusion of A Different World in 1993. Whether it was a "mistake" is subjective, but Guy’s choice was rooted in a combination of professional exhaustion and a principled stance against the network's treatment of her castmates.
Why Jasmine Guy Declined the Spinoff Character Fatigue: Guy portrayed Whitley Gilbert from ages 25 to 31. She expressed that after six years, she felt the character was "bigger" than she was and had "eclipsed" her identity. She found the high-pitched "Whitley voice" physically exhausting and was ready to "just be Jasmine" again. Creative Stagnation: She felt the characters of Whitley and Dwayne had been overused and that she had explored every possible dimension of Whitley. Support for the Cast: Guy was vocal about the "disrespect" she felt the network (NBC) showed towards the cast. She specifically cited the mistreatment of Lisa Bonet during the first season and the network's decision to pit A Different World against Martin—effectively forcing Black audiences to choose between two of the only shows featuring them at the time. Post-Series Career and Impact Turning down the spinoff allowed Jasmine Guy to pursue other passions that she felt had a limited "window of time," such as: Theater: She immediately moved to New York to star in Chicago. She later relocated to Atlanta, becoming a prominent figure in the True Colors Theatre Company, where she has both acted and directed. Diverse TV/Film Roles: She went on to secure recurring roles in shows like Dead Like Me, The Vampire Diaries, and Grey’s Anatomy. The Long-Term Resolution The decision arguably paid off in the long run. By stepping away when she did, she preserved the "Whitley & Dwayne" legacy without diluting it through a potentially unsupported spinoff. Interestingly, as of late 2025, Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison have finally agreed to return to their iconic roles. They are set to recur in a Netflix sequel series (ordered in December 2025) that focuses on their characters' youngest daughter, Deborah Wayne, as she starts her freshman year at Hillman College. This return allows Guy to revisit the character on her own terms, 40 years after her journey began, while honoring the legacy she worked hard to protect. |
