Was Dwayne getting cold feet and going out with another woman while engaged to Whitley her karma? She pulled a lot of antics while he was with Kinu. The final straw being that pseudo maid and dropping the prune cobbler his mother made.

In A Different World, whether Dwayne Wayne’s cold feet and subsequent "coffee date" were Whitley’s karma for her treatment of Kinu Owens is a popular debate among fans.
Whitley's Antics (The "Karma" Argument) During Season 4, while Dwayne was seriously dating Kinu, Whitley engaged in several manipulative behaviors to sabotage their relationship: The "Pseudo-Maid" Incident: In the episode "Good Help Is Hard to Fire" (Season 4, Episode 7), Whitley allowed Ron to hire her as a "maid" for Dwayne and Kinu’s apartment. Her true motive was to hover around Dwayne and drive Kinu crazy with her presence. The Prune Cobbler: During the same "maid" arc, Whitley’s clumsiness and interference led to the legendary moment involving Dwayne's mother's prune cobbler. While trying to "help" or simply being her chaotic self, she dropped the dish Adele Wayne had specifically made for Dwayne, further straining his relationship with Kinu. The "Pseudo-Engagement": Whitley later faked an engagement to a man named "Cousin Carlton" just to make Dwayne jealous while he was still with Kinu. Dwayne’s Cold Feet (The Response) In Season 5, once Dwayne and Whitley were finally engaged, the power dynamic shifted: The "Date": Feeling pressured by Whitley’s high-maintenance wedding planning and her demands, Dwayne sought an "escape". He went on a coffee date with Lisa Westin (played by Debbi Morgan) after meeting her at a faculty function. The Breakup: Dwayne eventually confessed his doubts and the date to Whitley during their high-tension engagement party. Devastated and feeling betrayed, Whitley was the one to officially call off the engagement in the episode "Do You Take This Woman?". The Legacy Many viewers see Dwayne’s actions as justified or as a "taste of her own medicine" after she spent an entire season trying to break him and Kinu up. However, others argue that Dwayne’s emotional infidelity was a deeper betrayal because he had already made a formal commitment to her. This cycle of dysfunction eventually led to the series' most famous moment: Dwayne interrupting Whitley's wedding to Byron Douglas III to finally make things right. |
