Ratings were down. McKeon wasn't on the show much anymore. The cast was getting older.

This episode screamed of CBS wanting an episode to bring in younger viewers.

Actually the ratings wasnt down, it was still in top 20. This is from a dec 28 1984 article

Alice was one of CBS top 20 shows, but still one of the lowest rated shows of the season, It hadn't been top 20 since 1982:
