Good day folks! This is my first post in this thread, and I do enjoy what I see here. I hope to enjoy the show for the long run.
I thought this would be a good fit here, because this show has been lingering in and out of my head for a good ten years. I remembered a short lived series about a movie theater on CBS, and thanks to Youtube, I deduced it to be The Popcorn Kid. Another thing I somewhat remember is a TV Guide ad featuring the show in a black background, but my mind is in a haze in regards to that. Anyway, do any of you remember this short lived show? Were the seven episodes that aired worth watching? Finally, does anyone remember the aforementioned ad? Please discuss. Thanks in advance for your responses! |

I remember this show. It aired on CBS on Friday nights. Faith Ford was in the cast. This was after she had been on soap operas and the movie You Talkin' to Me?
I cannot remember what else was in it. It was set in the lobby of a grand movie cinemahouse. The various characters were employees of the moviehouse. This was one of the final shows that MTM Productions produced, I believe. |

'The Popcorn Kid' was fresh and funny, but it never popped with viewers. CBS did have high expectations for it (an MTM Productions/Enterprises series after all) premiering it in the hammock between 'Kate & Allie' and 'Newhart' at 8:30 pm on Monday nights before moving the series to Friday nights at 8:30 pm (hammocked between 'Together We Stand' at 8 pm and then-dominant 'Dallas' at 9 pm) where it aired opposite 'Webster' on ABC and 'Amazing Stories' on NBC.
On Friday, 'The Popcorn Kid' performed OK, coming in a competitive third place in the timeslot. 'The Popcorn Kid' averaged 10.6HH/19% vs. NBC's 'Amazing Stories' averaging 11.7HH/21% and ABC's 'Webster' (mostly repeats) averaging 12.1HH/22%. This series definitely merits a DVD release, perhaps packaged together with some other short-run MTMer sitcom from the late-eighties/early-nineties:

Good show. I re-watched it a few years ago when I transferred the series to DVD.
