TV Reneé Rapp is Leaving "The Sex Lives of College Girls"

Reneé Rapp Addresses her Upcoming "Sex Lives of College Girls" Exit
by Vlada Gelman
July 10, 2023

Reneé Rapp is expressing her love for her "The Sex Lives of College Girls" character just hours after it was announced that the actress would be exiting the Max comedy.

Rapp is slated to recur in a handful of Season 3 episodes and will then depart after those appearances.

[The Sex Lives of College Girls] moved me out to LA and introduced me to some of my favorite people. 2 and a half years later — it’s given me y’all and this community,” Rapp wrote on Twitter, thanking creators Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, as well as “everyone at Max for believing in me.

a lot of queer work gets belittled — but playing Leighton has changed my life,” Rapp continued. “i love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her. i hope she gave y’all a little bit of that too. she’s such a tiny part of representation but even the tiny parts count. i wouldn’t be half the person I am without her and y’all. i love that bitch more than you know.

Rapp went on to add that she’s “so excited” for the upcoming season. “I can’t wait for you to see what we have coming for her and the girls,” she concluded.

Reneé Rapp on "The Sex Lives of College Girls" Exit & Feeling “Bullied” by Industry before Mean Girls Casting
by Armando Tinoco
January 10, 2024

Reneé Rapp is opening up about her exit from "The Sex Lives of College Girls" and being cast in the musical film adaptation of Mean Girls.

Amid filming of Season 3 of the Max series, Rapp announced she was departing the show to pursue her singing career. In a new interview, Rapp talked about the work environment she’s in following her exit from the Mindy Kaling-created series.

The people in my life that I work with now care about me as a person,” she told Vanity Fair. “And I think that is a difference from things I’ve experienced in the past.

Rapp is the queen bee of Mean Girls starring as Regina George. The singer and songwriter recalled that when she was offered the role she was “jaded and really angry and sad and bullied.

I was like, ‘I hate the industry,'” she said. However, when Tina Fey offered her the role in the musical she “was really exciting,” adding, “I have a new start.

Rachel McAdams originated the role of Regina George on the big screen but Rapp says she has a new take on the character.

I’m a serial flirt. So I’m flirting with everybody, especially the girls, right? I have a bitchy attitude, so I’m going to be bitchy. I also am very dry, so she’s going to be dry,” she said.

As for working with Fey, Rapp said, “A lot of people talk about lifting women up and being a ****ing feminist. And behind the scenes, it’s really not that. And I think that Tina is exactly as good of a person as she is hilarious and intelligent.

Co-Creator Assures Fans Leighton’s Story isn’t Finished Yet
by Natalie Oganesyan
September 1, 2024

"The Sex Lives of College Girls" co-creator Justin Noble is assuring fans they haven’t seen the last of Reneé Rapp‘s Leighton, who is back for a handful of episodes to wrap up her storyline in Season 3.

[She] definitely still has some lessons and room to grow ahead of her,” Noble told Teen Vogue in a recent interview previewing the forthcoming third season. “She’ll be faced with a couple of big choices and she’ll have to make a couple of big decisions in all aspects of her life.

Reneé Rapp Plays Coy about Reason for "The Sex Lives of College Girls" Exit
by Glenn Garner
August 6, 2025

She’s signed a hundred NDAs, but Reneé Rapp still says something when asked about her departure from HBO Max‘s "The Sex Lives of College Girls".

Although she didn’t get into specifics about the reason for her 2023 exit from the Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble comedy-drama, she explained that she didn’t “think anybody cared” she left.

It was just so fun. Like, it was so fun. It was awesome,” she said when broaching the topic on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “It was just so fun.

Did you sign an NDA?” asked host Alex Cooper, to which Rapp confirmed, “I’ve signed many, bro.” She recalled that the cast and crew took it “totally fine” when she announced her departure.

Sometimes you just know,” explained Rapp. “Also, nothing on a set is ever a secret. At least, it’s really hard to do that. Also, I was the last one finding out about things. So I don’t really think anybody cared, to be honest. I’m sure somebody did, but I don’t care.

Rapp alluded to her exit from the show on her single “Leave Me Alone” from her recently released sophomore album Bite Me.

Sign a hundred NDAs, but I still say something / Leave me alone, bitch, I wanna have fun / I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t f*cking,” she sings on the track.

When asked if anyone “tried to stop” her from including the lyric, Rapp said: “No. God forbid I use wordplay. Similar to all the ********, what am I to do if not make music that is genuinely reflective of my life? It just is.
