After following the successes with the Disney shows The Mickey Mouse Club The Adventures Of Spin And Marty and the Disneyland TV series and Disney's Wonderful World Of Color in the 50's Disney had always dreamed of expanding their empire in television and so in 1983 The Disney Channel was launched with the mission to bring quality family entertainment that everyone could enjoy. With an original format The Disney Channel's original format was simple with weekday/weekend mornings/afternoons with cartoons for kids and the nighttime hours were for adults and with a format like this Disney knew that this was their dream they had always wanted. And in the early days The Disney Channel would do world premieres of new Disney movies such as Beauty And The Beast in 1991 and Aladdin in 1992 and it also marked a huge milestone in history when The Disney Channel launched their very first game show for kids with Contraption in 1983. And they had also launched original series such as Avonlea and the annual American Teacher Awards held every year. But what I think caused The Disney Channel to go downhill was when they started to appeal to the market of older kids and teens and once they did switch from the family oriented channel to the older kids and teen market you could tell they were aiming at a new audience. And by having their own original movies such as High School Musical Cadet Kelly Miracle In Lane 2 and others Disney had proven themselves lucky with Disney Channel. And it proved that they could market a whole new trend of new celebrities such as Ashley Tisdale Corbin Bleu the late Cameron Boyce Selena Gomez and others Disney Channel knew how to appeal to the older crowd. But what I think they should do is create a vintage Disney Channel called Classic Disney that would show reruns of Spin And Marty The Mickey Mouse Club and other shows and show some vintage movies like The Happiest Millionaire Pollyanna Old Yeller and more and it would be huge. I am still surprised that Disney Channel is still surviving even with Disney+ in now but I do hope someday Disney Channel returns to it's original format in the future

Disney Channel was great for the first 10-15 years as a premium service that showed Walt Disney library programs/movies/cartoons and complementary acquisitions and made-fors. One they compartmentalized, diminished, then got rid of Vault Disney and set out to top Nick with tweens as a "free'' channel, it's been all downhill.

Since Disney Chanel is celebrating their 40th anniversary this month, I decided to look back at one of their most well known efforts to educate kids about important life values, The Friends For Change initiative.

Disney Channel has created some of the biggest, most relevant, and most talked about celebrities, pop stars, and actors today. Within the past few years, Disney has gone through a rapid decline, losing over 4 million viewers. What went wrong?? In this video we will be discussing the fall of Disney Channel.

15 Best '80s Disney Channel Shows, Ranked

While The Disney Channel is best celebrated for its '90s and '00s programming, it still managed to impress audiences in the 1980s, too.
