Danielle Brisbois complained about that later on. I agree, they should have let them film a final episode or movie finale and end it properly, like they did M*A*S*H.

Watching that show was not very fun to watch. Sally Struthers' Gloria was at her best when her and Carroll O' Connor had those tender scenes together on All In the Family. They acted as though they were truly father and daughter. One scene stood out when Gloria sat on Archie's lap when Mike ran out on her when she found out she was pregnant in Season 6. I was in tears on that episode. Archie showed a soft side to him when it came to his "little goil"

Not only was Gloria dry, her voice was annoying (moreso than Edith's).... and her whining got on my nerves. I liked the character of Stephanie over Gloria.
In this Spring 82 interview Danielle Brisebois talked about joining Gloria if ABP ended. Then potentially a Stephanie spin off series down the road.

I'm assuming the Gloria door was closed when CoC disowned the series and it didn't matter anyway as both were cancelled within 11 months.

Not sure how Gloria and Meathead could have returned to 704 Hauser since Stephanie and Billie were now using their old bedroom.

They could have just kicked out Stephanie and Billie and put them in their own spinoff.

Unlikely since Stephanie would have been only 15. That would have had to wait a couple seasons.

The only thing they could have done is have Meathead, Gloria and Joey move back into Jeffersons house since in finest Archie's Place tradition, Ed and Polly Swanson had gone MIA the last couple seasons.
