I never saw that one. That sounds pretty weak. If they couldn't have gotten Rob Reiner, they shouldn't have had an episode with "Mike" in it.

From what I understand, CBS felt Archie Bunker was tired and wanted to get rid of it. They saw Gloria as being tied to that character and that era and dispensed with her as well.

Shows that were lower-rated than either Archie Bunker's Place and Gloria were renewed for the 1983-84 season, so that theory has some validity.

Default the original pilot

WELL at first there was the 2 parter where GLORIA Came home after Mike left her (WHICH I HATED, b/c Mike would NEVER have left Gloria and joey, THEY WERE HIS LIFE, and I hate when they have a character do something totally against character just to change direction)

They filmed a pilot called THE FIRST DAY where Archie Helps Gloria Move and get her new job and meet Burgess Meredith and all.....

BUT Carol O Connor did NOT want that one shown on tv, b/c he decided it would be better for the show GLORIA to make it on its own, SOOOO they reshot the pilot , pretty much same plot WITHOUT ARCHIEs presence

THE RESHOT version aired as GLORIAs 1st ep

HOWEVER, the unaired pilot LATER was shown in Syndication as PART of ARCHIE BUNKERS PLACE

I have the unaired pilot for trade if anyone wants it

ITS ODD TO WATCH, b/c it has the Archie Bunkers Place theme and credits BUT It has STARRING SALLY STRUTHERS and the other names from GLORIA listed in the credits

Gloria was bad, b/c I hated how they had Mike do that to her.... it was wrong. I would have rather have Mike been killed or something

PLUS Gloria, was totally out of character too! When did she suddenly mature? it made no sense

And yet The Jeffersons went on for two more seasons.Maybe they weren't tied to Archie Bunker the same way Gloria was.Or perhaps The Jeffersons was higher rated.

I'm guessing the chances are slim for a DVD release of "Gloria". I wonder if they would eventually do it for AITF completists. The upside is it would be a "Complete Series" release since there was only 1 season.

They should release it since they are releasing ABP which started Gloria.

I saw an interview with Carroll O'Connor from the late 1990s. He talked highly of Jean Stapleton & Rob Reiner, but acted as if he refrained from talking about Sally Struthers.

According to O'Connor, halfway through the production of Gloria, Lear insisted that O'Connor hire his brother-in-law to produce "Gloria" as well as fire the shows writers and hire the ones that Lear wanted. It lead to another O'Connor-Lear battle and the series was canceled, perhaps not so much do to ratings but behind-the-scenes drama.

Thanks for clearing that up because I was always confused why Gloria was cancelled and it finished in the Top 20 after it's First Season

I think there were also behind-the-scenes network politics, because both shows technically should have been renewed, because lower-rated series like The Dukes Of Hazzard were.

I think CBS saw Archie as tired and wanted to get rid of him and by association, Gloria too. There's no reason why both shows shouldn't have returned for the 1983-84 season. Networks work in very strange ways.

at the time I was so disgusted with the network

YES Archie Bunkers Place had gotten tired and routine, BUT after all that the show had given to the network, they OWED IT TO THE SHOW to give it a final season and a great finale episode---- i always hoped there would be a finale episode where Mike would come back to New York and ask Gloria to take him back.... and since Mike had no job, they would all move back into Archies house and be a family again.....

but, nope, they just got canned without warning
