Sally Struther was broke. There was a lot more long term financial security being the star of Gloria if the series had taken off than there would have been as a co-star on Archie.

She wanted to do movies and thought she was going to be in demand. She did not get many offers which made her come back.
IMHO if the spinoff had happened in 1978 it would have been a great success when All In The Family was still a dominating show. When Gloria debuted even Archie Bunker's place was running out of steam and about to be cancelled.

Echo what Best TV ever said. Sally Struthers thought because of AITF she would be in huge demand but wasn't.
