Did Kirk Cameron's acting abilities greatly deteriorate late in the show's run

I thought Kirk Cameron played the character of a whiney teenager very well. Maybe, KC wasn't really acting but playing himself.

He was a hot teen idol while on Growing Pains whether we agree on his level of acting abilities.

Bill Cosby was a kindly moral patriarch when on The Cosby Show. Because of my left side paresis, left facial paralysis and dribbling (subarachnoid hemorrhage from birth trauma) I learned the hard way exactly what people - regardless of gender - are like when they know they can get away with it.

I disagree. I don't think Kirk Cameron's acting abilities deteriorated at all during the run of Growing Pains.

I just watched a few scenes from the earlier seasons and you're right, he did whine a lot especially when arguing with the parents. It just feels more pronounced in the last 2 seasons, but maybe I only perceive it that knowing what was happening behind the scenes.

I also noticed Ben and Carol started doing it as well in the middle seasons, possibly trying to mimic Kirk since he was a big star of the show who's getting lots of laughs on his delivery. Maybe the producers asked them to do it though, like "hey when he whines during an argument the audience loves it"

As others have pointed out, Mike Seaver became much more uptight after Kirk Cameron's real life religious awakening. He was no longer fun and endearing since Kirk pretty much insisted that his character could no longer be a lovable troublemaker.
