TV Prince To Guest on "New Girl"

Prince on "New Girl"! Music Icon Will Guest Star as Himself in Super Bowl Episode and Interfere with Nick and Jess
by Kristin Dos Santos
12/12/13

Prince is coming to "New Girl"!

The music icon is set to appear in the Fox comedy's Super Bowl episode, and will interfere with the show's much-loved coupling of Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), sources confirm to E! News.

This marks Prince's first-ever appearance on a TV comedy, and he will be playing himself.

We're told that Prince is a fan of "New Girl" and asked to come on the show a while ago. Fox execs felt that the episode airing after the Super Bowl would be the perfect time.

First Look: "New Girl" Welcomes Prince for Post-Super Bowl Episode
Jan 15, 2014
by Rob Moynihan

"New Girl" is going to party like it's 1999 when special guest star Prince stops by for the Fox comedy's big post-Super Bowl episode on Feb. 2.

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) bonds with the music legend after they meet at a party. "She's goofy and out there, and he's this wise, quiet sort of oracle," says creator Liz Meriwether.

But don't expect boyfriend Nick (Jake Johnson) to be jealous. "Nick's a huge Prince fan," Meriwether says. "He's immediately like, 'It's an honor to give you my girlfriend.'"

The legendary musician and MTV icon, whose 2007 Super Bowl halftime show is considered one of the most memorable, was found dead early this morning at his home in Minnesota, according to TMZ. Two years ago, Prince played himself on the post-Super Bowl episode of New Girl.

"New Girl" Episode featuring Prince To Air on Tuesday
by Dan Snierson
4/22/16

Friday, Fox confirmed to EW that it will air "New Girl’s" season 3 episode that featured a quirky, memorable guest-spot by Prince on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. (The network will air original episodes of "New Girl" at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. that night.)

In that 2014 installment, Prince gave Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) permission to freak out when they met him at a party before the Royal One romantically counseled Jess.

"New Girl" producers released the following statement on Thursday in the wake of the tragic news:

We are all so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of this hero of ours — and so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet him and to have him on our show. It’s something we will remember forever. Our thoughts go out to his family. We are among the millions of people who will truly miss the brilliant Artist.

Default New Girl creator recalls every detail of working with Prince

http://www.vulture.com/2016/04/new-g...r-prince.html?

"I didn’t know Prince personally,” writes Liz Meriwether of the 2014 post-Super Bowl episode, which Fox is re-airing tonight. "Ultimately, I only worked with him for a couple of weeks in December three years ago. But I will remember that time for the rest of my life, not because of his celebrity — I mean, a little bit because of that, sure — but because I got to observe the way he worked. I got to observe the rigor and the care that he put into every detail, every word, every moment.”

Prince Vetoed a Kardashian Cameo on "New Girl" Super Bowl Episode
by Ariana Bacle
5/10/16

When Prince appeared on a 2014 episode of "New Girl", he had a specific request: no Kardashians. Unfortunately, the crew found that out too late.

Zooey Deschanel went on "Conan" Monday night and recalled how Khloé Kardashian and Kris Jenner came to set for a scene at Prince’s house.

I get there the day Prince is supposed to arrive and I’m studying my lines and one of the PAs comes in and she’s like, ‘I need to take all of the sides, the scripts,’” Deschanel said. “I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ I walk outside, and she has, like, a bonfire. She’s burning all the scripts and the call sheets.

Deschanel continued, referring to the episode’s celebrity cameos:

It turns out that someone from Prince’s camp said, ‘Who are the celebrities? I hope it’s not the Kardashians.’” Hence the cautious PA’s decision to burn all evidence that the two reality TV stars were ever there.

I felt so bad because obviously everyone had gone out of their way to be there on that day,” Deschanel said. “But Prince was running the show, so.

Hannah Simone Says Prince had Crush on Her, Requested a Ping-Pong Scene
by Wesley Stenzel
October 30, 2024

Prince's guest appearance on "New Girl" may have had an ulterior motive. He wanted to join the Fox sitcom because he had a crush on star Hannah Simone, the actress revealed on her rewatch podcast The Mess Around with Hannah and Lamorne.

"The reason he wanted to do it is because he had a crush on our little Hannah," costume designer Debra McGuire said. "Yeah. He tried for a very long time," Simone confirmed. "He tried for a very long time to find a way to be in the same room together."

Simone said that she had zero inclination to reciprocate Prince's advances when he guest starred in the season 3 episode "Prince" in 2014.

"I was not interested in that way," Simone said. "Love a Prince song. Happy to put on a Prince record. I was not interested in anything else. So I was never in the same room with Prince. And then yeah, he was like a teenage boy who showed up at my job, which was really funny."

Simone said that the singer had a bizarre request to accommodate.

"Apparently with people that he really likes to have that quality time with, he liked to play ping-pong," the actress explained. "It was like 5 in the morning, they had to write in the tag [to play over the end credits], 'cause how were they going to incorporate ping-pong into the show? And they had to write this tag where Prince would get his request, which was: He wanted to play ping-pong with me."

Simone said that filming the scene was somewhat tense.

"They saved it as the last thing that we shot, cause they were low-key scared that if we shot that early, he would be — he's Prince," Simone explained. "So he could be like, 'Okay, I'm gonna go now.' And so we saved it for the end. And the thing that I'll never [forget] is: I don't play ping-pong, I'm not a good ping-pong player. I was so tired. It had been a 20-something hour day, and I just slammed the shot."

Simone continued, "My body just went like, 'We're doing it.' And then he was like — he genuinely did walk off, which was really funny."

Lamorne Morris Reveals why Prince's "New Girl" Episode was his Favorite and Least Favorite to Film
by Shania Russell
November 6, 2024

Lamorne Morris' favorite episode of "New Girl" might come as a surprise — because it's also his least favorite.

"This answer is gonna be strange because it's the same episode,” Morris told Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin, and Sophie Ansari on the latest episode of their podcast, Podcrushed. "My favorite is the Prince episode because for obvious reasons — you get to hang out with Prince."

He continued, "There was so much fanfare around it and so much mystique around him, and when you meet him you're like, 'I see why. This man is illuminating. And he's got on so many tassels and zippers.'"

But the excitement of filming alongside The High Priest of Pop was complicated by Morris' mental health taking a serious dip.

"It was also the worst episode to film because — I don't know why and it went away — but for a couple of months, I had this wild bout of depression and I didn't know why," he said. "It just kinda hit me, and I'm assuming it was diet-related because once I cleaned up my diet, the mood shifted."
