Was Sliders most hampered by its "Lost in Space"-like plot

By Lost in Space plot, I mean is that the plot for most part, focused on characters trying to go home and instead of exploring the dimensions they were in albeit with a small budget. In other words, the plot often puts the characters in the position of never being able to succeed or the show will be over.

And in the case of Sliders, did it feel like the the characters were just treating the visiting of other dimensions as a way to kill time until the next jump instead of wanting to see and learn what's out there?
