If interested please read my entire thoughts on page one of this thread, third post, in short....I love Lucie and Desi Jr. (they are the estate), but this is about ego, marketing, etc. I explain (which is just my opinion) as to exactly why and how the cover photos are being chosen.

But anyway, season 3 is also the highest rated of all the seasons (#3 for that year)--when Desi Jr left, season 4 dropped to #11--could the teen idol effect really been that huge for Lucy's ratings? most likely......and by the final season when Lucie herself cut back her appearances, the ratings tumbled to #29--I know I certainly had a big crush on her Now, I'm not saying Desi Jr and Lucie are the ONLY reasons ratings were up and then down, but I do believe they had some sort of effect.
I suspect that the #3 rating for the full season is due in large part to that season's premiere ep, Lucy Meets the Burtons, which was the highest-rated episode ever for Here's Lucy. Lucy had the Burtons when they were probably at the height of their careers and their marriage.

There's no doubt that opening episode helped somewhat in putting Here's Lucy in third place that season, but the show generally ranked high throughout the season anyway. I was able to dig up ratings on Google News for 12 of the 24 episodes that aired during the 1970-71 season. Based on the ratings for those other weeks, Here's Lucy on average ranked about 4th place. So even withou the Taylor/Burton episode, it still would have landed pretty close to the same spot. Here's what I found:

September 14, 1970 (Ep 1: "Lucy Meets the Burtons"); ranked 1st

October 5, 1970 (Ep 4: "Lucy and the Drum Contest"); ranked 3rd.

October 19, 1970 (Ep 6: "Lucy, the Coed"); ranked 3rd.

October 26, 1970 (Ep 7: "Lucy, the American Mother"); ranked 4th

November 9, 1970 (Ep 9: "Lucy Cuts Vincent's Price"); ranked 6th

November 16, 1970 (Ep 10: "Lucy, the Diamond Cutter"); ranked 4th (HL was #5 overall that week, but the #2 show was a Bob Hope special, so HL was the #4 series).

November 24, 1970 (Ep 11: "Lucy and Jack Benny's Biography"); ranked 2nd (HL was #3 overall that week, but the top show that week was a special, so HL was the #2 series).

November 30, 1970 (Ep 12: "Lucy and Rudy Vallee"); ranked 5th.

December 14, 1970 (Ep: 14: "Lucy, Part-Time Wife"); ranked 4th (HL was #6 overall that week, but the #1 and #3 that week were specials, so HL was the 4th-ranked series).

January 11, 1971 (Ep 18: "Lucy and the 20-20 Vision"); ranked 6th (HL was #7 overall that week, but the #1 show was a Bob Hope special, so HL was the #6-ranked series)

January 25, 1971 (Ep 20: "Lucy's House Guest, Harry"); ranked 6th

February 3, 1971 (Ep 21: "Lucy and Alladin's Lamp"); ranked 6th

UPDATE: 6/1/10: Well I got "Here's Lucy. Season 4" and just wanted to update and say "Can MPI keep topping themselves with these releases?" The answer seems to be a very big YES!!! The extra features disc literally is chocked full of so many unseen and rare gems that the disc alone could be a separate release. I spent 2 hours just watching the features and still have more to watch....my main excitement was the "Make Room For Granddaddy" episode....as I didn't remember this series at all...it is introduced my Margarie Lord and is a rare treat & delight...yes the premise has been done before and Danny doesn't really shine here, but just seeing the opening and full closing credits were exciting, which reminded me of a "Rhoda" type of style....you'll see what I mean.....Full 25 minutes and great vivid colors....it is followed by a St. Judes commercial and it really shows that this charity is doing some wonderful work. Other special features were Lucie & Desi Jr. on a color episode of "Kraft Music Hall" with Robert Young & Jane Wyatt....typical 10 minute skit about parents & children, but a rare and crossover delight for collectors......the B&W Desi Jr. Christmas eve appearance on "House Party" is brief but very sweet. Two different color Lucy themed appearances from Jack Benny specials including Lucy lip-syncing to "Hey Big Spender" and another featuring John Wayne & George Burns are treasures! The syndicated promos are great as they give you a brief 10 minute view of the entire season and there are tons of behind the scenes rehearsal footage showing Lucy as quite the perfectionist and professional. Including Desi Arnaz appearing on set, yes during production of "Here's Lucy" sharing the stage with Gary Morton! The Arnaz Estate and MPI are releasing the definative collection and certainly are giving fans plenty of extras including full unedited episodes of this series for a bargain price....Please support these releases as you can tell they are being put together with tender loving care....and for the fans!

I have no affliation with MPI or the Arnaz estate and write this as a professional opinion of the upcoming June 15, 2010 release.

Thanks TeeVeeCloset for the review. I'm looking forward to getting my copy. These sets are great. Can't wait to see what they have in-store for Season 4. The bonus features sound great for this release. Only 2 more weeks to go!
