You could've had him cast on a successful series and play off the wacky co-stars and director (think Tootsie) instead of portraying him as pushing-40 struggling actor whose surrounded by a lame cast of characters.

Not really. It is hard for sitcoms about Hollywood to be successful. It It is mostly due to the fact there is a disconnect between what the average person considers to be real life and hollywood celebrity life.
