I'm not buying what this guy is selling: that Scrappy Doo was good for a few seasons. He was not. Not ever. And every bit of hatred that Scrappy Doo gets is well-deserved.

He brought back in a younger audience thus saving the show briefly but then became something of nuisance over time.

He lasted for seven straight seasons of various Scooby incarnations. Like “Aquaman is worthless”, “Scrappy ruined the Scooby franchise” is a repeated enough rumor that the feckless public take it to be a truth. Ya want annoying, try Flim Flam.

You don’t have to be a Scooby-Doo fan to know that everybody hates Scrappy-Doo. But the more you peel back the layers of how internet hate and cultural nerdrage has manifested through Scrappy, it...is actually really, really weird. We dive into Scrappy’s history, the psychology of scapegoating, how toxic fandom magnifies our own capacity to hate -- and why it’s worth trying to change all that.

Is it time to cut Scrappy-Doo some slack? Or does he deserve all the hate that comes his way?

=============================================================

While some characters develop a fandom, others develop a hatedom, and it's difficult to find a cartoon character more maligned and despised than Scooby-Doo's nephew, Scrappy-Doo. The character was introduced to the Scooby-Doo franchise in the late 1970s in an attempt to bolster ratings and save the show from cancellation. It was a bold shake-up and it worked, audiences seemed to respond well to the character and the show's ratings instantly improved. But not everyone was happy with Scrappy, and over the years the pup has been dragged through the mud, being mocked in Cartoon Network commercials, humiliated in other shows, cast as the main villain in the first live-action movie; even fan fiction about his murdered corpse popping up in Miami went viral. Scrappy has even become synonymous with the concept of Jumping the Shark, and his name has been used to refer to characters being introduced to series which have caused fans to unintentionally hate the character. So how did Scrappy-Doo go from savior to villain, and is all this hate justified? Join us now as we look back at the development and the legacy of what has become arguably the most divisive character in the history of Saturday morning cartoons.

  • 01:20 - 02:02 - Falling ratings
  • 02:03 - 03:14 - Scrappy-Doo joins the show
  • 03:15 - 03:44 - Development of character
  • 03:45 - 05:02 - Initial reaction
  • 05:03 - 06:05 - Early 1980s
  • 06:06 - 07:16 - Remainder of the 1980s
  • 07:17 - 08:33 - 1990s-early 2000s
  • 08:34 - 09:32 - Why the negative treatment?
  • 09:33 - 11:16 - Further explanations
  • 11:17 - 12:46 - Impact and legacy
  • 12:47 - 13:50 - Conclusion

Telehell: EPISODE 63 - The Curious Case of Scrappy Doo

Quote:
If ever a TV character was the definition of doing a thankless job, only to be shunned for no reason, Scrappy Doo is the Woodcarved drawing in the dictionary. Today, we find out how he saved, ruined, and became a punchline in a durable TV franchise.
