I am not surprised it is canceled, Anna leaving is just not the same without her and it should have been canceled after Anna left

I asked Mimi Kennedy on Twitter how many episodes there would be this season. Surprisingly, she actually responded to me saying she believes it's 18 episodes.

Wow! Cool that you got a reply from one of the stars, no less, and thanks for sharing the info! Looks like Lorsie was right, as well!

18 is 5 more than I expected. I'll look on them as nice bonuses.

True. At the slow rate they were airing the episodes, I was just HOPING we'd make it to at least 13. So 18 was a satisfactory answer to me.

I've really missed Christy this season but I was still hoping for just one more season... a full season... and where they all know it's their last going into it. I know a lot of fans tend to want their favorite shows to go on and on forever and ever. Not me. I want it to have a good run, of course, but not just keep going because no one has cancelled them yet. (*cough* The Simpsons *cough*). I think 8 years is a perfect run for a sitcom.

For me, 5 years is a perfect run for a sitcom, usually after season 5, quality goes downhill

Eight years is a great run for a good sitcom, for sure. Most definitely don't last that long.

As you say, The Simpsons has been on for far, far too long. The first eight seasons were wonderful, and then it got bad. But many shows can't hold things together even that long.

Simpsons did not get bad until after season 10 in my opinion

I recently heard a theory that Anna may have gotten a bit "paranoid". What I mean is that her then husband, Chris Pratt, became an A-List blockbuster action star, and then he just dumped her.

Meanwhile, the show within itself, evolved into something totally different with her no longer being a mom having to deal with her own kids (they were written out). To top it all off, she had to "compete" with new arrivals like Jaime Pressely and Kristen Johnston, on top of Janney, for laughs.

There have been rumors that Anna has a drinking problem in real life. So you could imagine she was in a really bad place when she decided to leave. And Chuck Lorre didn't want a repeat of the Charlie Sheen PR drama and let her leave.

Just read that Anna got married a few weeks ago!
From the few bits I got from gossip in the past year I assumed she was going through a difficult time... hopes she's know ok!

Why would Chuck Lorre write the kids out of the Mom sitcom?

Multiple reasons, including:
  1. The kids never became more than a side-story in the series - Viewers tuned in to see Christy and Bonnie’s interactions and later those of the women in their support group. The children were never fully realized as characters and so they were moved to the back and then out of the story altogether.
  2. There were only so many lines in the sitcom and they couldn’t divided evenly - One of the problems that occurs in sitcoms is that when there are too many characters, there are only so many funny lines. When the narrative began to encompass the women’s support more, that left fewer lines for the kids.
  3. Leaving them in would eventually make the narrative even darker than it became - While Christy wasn’t a great mother, she wasn’t a monster or very neglectful. It would have taken the series down a less pleasant path had they remained and stories of Christy being gone for days or being arrested had become a bigger part of the narrative.
  4. Money - Child actors are expensive to work with and difficult to manage. Since they were not becoming “breakout characters”, it was likely cheaper to simply write them out of the series and pocket the savings created from that.
