I've read online that Newhart was the best American adaptation of Fawlty Towers even if that wasn't the full and actual intent.

Because it took notes from Amanda's By the Sea. On the show, Amanda's son was a wimp married to a snot-nosed, blonde priss who worked at the hotel but thought that everything was beneath her. Then, what a coincidence, Newhart is inspired to rewrite Julia Duffy and Peter Scolari to play the same type of characters.

Newhart also borrowed heavily from a lot of different sources, including Green Acres.

For what it's worth, I've always thought Michael and Stephanie were brought in as a Cheers knockoff. She shows up with a busted marriage and no noticeable skills, and just stays.
