Thelma was shameless; I couldn’t imagine moving in on a guy like that! I think she was very insecure and a little awkward. In the “Thelma’s Birthday” episode, she briefly dated the Deacon’s doctor (Richard Lawson; aka Tina Knowles’ ex). She got mad at the doctor and even Rueben and admitted that it was hard for her to date because she had big feet and big hips.

The chase and tension gave the sitcom some humor. The show was out of gas and finally let them hook up and marry.
