The search for British actor Julian Sands has resumed 5 months after he went missing during a hike in a mountain area northeast of Los Angeles.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced Monday that they picked up the rescue efforts in the Mount Baldy wilderness.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Sands was not located," the sheriff's department said.




Over 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff conducted the most recent search on Saturday, assisted by drone crews and two helicopters that conducted aerial searches in remote and otherwise inaccessible areas, officials said.

"Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions," the sheriff's department said. Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10 plus feet of ice and snow.




Since Sands went missing, the sheriff's department has conducted eight ground and air searches in hopes of finding the actor, while volunteers have dedicated over 500 hours searching for Sands, officials said.

"Mr. Sands' missing person case remains active and search efforts will continue in a limited capacity," the sheriff's department said.

Human Remains Found in Area Where Actor Julian Sands Went Missing

Authorities announced on Saturday that human remains have been found in the area where actor Julian Sands went missing during a hike this past January. Hikers happened to stumble upon the remains in the Mount Baldy wilderness and reported the discovery.

Identification should be completed next week, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department added. “Fontana Station deputies, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Operations Division, responded to the scene. The decedent was transported to the Coroner’s Office, pending positive identification. Identification should be completed next week at which time we will update this press release.

Sheriff Confirms Julian Sands' Body was Found Near Mount Baldy this Week

After six months of searching, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office confirmed today that the human remains found earlier this week by hikers were, indeed, those of actor Julian Sands. The statement says his cause of death is still pending.

"The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood. The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results. We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands."

Julian Sands' Cause of Death Deemed "Undetermined"

The cause of death for Julian Sands, the English actor whose remains were discovered five months after he went missing while hiking in Southern California's San Gabriel Mountains, has been deemed "undetermined."

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed to PEOPLE Monday the determination was due to the condition of Sands' body. "This is common when dealing with cases of this type," a public information officer said.

The sheriff's department didn't immediately respond to EW's requests for comment.
