It has been reported many times that Linda Lavin saw herself as the star of the show and was threatened by the popularity of the Holliday character. Lavin didn’t seem to get it that her character was the “straight man” of the more comedic characters. Lavin should have been happy to just have a popular show and have that show on so many years.

She should have been thrilled the show was a big success. She also was annoyed at Polly's catchphrase "kiss my grits". CBS thought they would kill 2 birds with one stone, make Linda happy and give Flo a show. This segment glossed over so many facts of the tensions on the set.
When Flo's replacement was hired, she experienced the same kind of treatment and left the show after 1 season. This segment left out probably Polly's most famous role after Alice when she played Rose's blind sister on the Golden Girls.
